I consider getting a cell phone now and then but when I look on site or go to a store, I really have trouble figuring things out.
Hey, I have trouble picking up storage bags at the grocery store now a days.
Some things I consider are the prepaid programs instead of a year contract fee but not sure about that.
I currently am paying about $25 a month for a land line for cost is also a factor in this decision.
I think I would prefer a phone I can text message with.
I am rarely on the phone. And I think text messaging would work better for me.
I also need something like a blue tooth as holding the phone up to my ear is not an option usually...arms too weak or something going on with the brain.
I use a head set with my land line.
OK brain is going....taking a break.
Just looking for suggestions.
I was 15 miles out of town the other day with a person who had a cell phone.
She was not able to get reception on her phone.
So, I was concerned about that.
One reason I am considering the phone thing is that I am driving a car with over 200,000 miles on it and go to remote places to go for a short walk along a stream or on a trail.
Just in case, I need to call AAA towing service I would like to have a phone to call them.
But, we were out at another remote place I go and she was able to get reception.
I have a friend who has an I Phone. I liked it. But, don't know how it is for text messaging.
I just played bead dazzle or something like that on it.
And checked out the bird identification program she has on it.
I do think if I had an i phone with programs on it I would be able to stay out doors longer.
I have a reclining camp chair I could sit in and use the phone to take my mind off of lyme like I do with the computer at home.

I originally had a pay-per-use phone with 'cingular', but they got inhaled wholehog by ...'att'..., who then jacked up the rates and ultimately apparently stopped supporting it; it stopped working; no communicatrion from 'att'.. whatsoever. Looking around, I managed to get a deal that works for me, with 'working assets', which has a better "corporate reputation", in any case. I pay $40 a month, but it's not their least expensive plan. They were very good when I had trouble, too. Oh, yes, when I signed up I got a really great phone--a 'sanyo' fold-up (so you don't make "pocket calls"), with internet (but I think you get charged more if you use it, so I never have- I should learn the story, thoiugh...)... It also has a camera which I've gotten some surprisibgly good shots with. I hope you find the one that works best for you! DaveS

- For traveling like you do, yes, a cell phone is a safety necessity. I wonder if you can find one that is "shielded" so that some of the concerns with electromagnetics can be mitigated?
Still, I strongly suspect that the digital pulses into our ears are not good for the ear nerve itself - or for the brain. But I'm most concerned here with the EARS. Our ear nerves are very tender, and even more sensitive to damage when on abx.
Cutting your land-line phone may also cut many of your relationships.
I cannot talk to anyone calling me from their cell phone. For a minute for a quick schedule change, that's one thing. But I've lost several relationships because so many friends and relatives have cut their land-line and use only digital cell phones. I have an elderly aunt 2,000 miles away and we adore each other - but I cannot talk to her anymore because of her cell phone.
That digital pulse is like lightening to my ears, triggering pain but also seizures with some of the sudden shifts of frequency from the other end. I have the best land line phone I can find, I've adjusted my ear piece as much as possible but the distortion from incoming digital technology has literally cost me brain damage from seizures.
I know I'm not the only one bothered by the razor-like cuts to the ear from digital cell phones so please consider this aspect, as well, in your decision.
You say you would really use messaging more, and that can be handy if you don't have carpal tunnel - but do all your friends and relatives "text"?
=============
While not exactly about cell phones, digital systems are involved here - that same sharp frequency pulsation:
If you are someone that rarely uses a cellphone or if you are someone that is on a very tight budget then I highly recommend Page Plus Cellular's plan. My mother is someone that rarely uses the phone but she wanted a cellphone so she could carry it with her just in case of an emergency. So, I bought her a Page Plus cellular phone.
The cheapest plan will cost you around $30.00 per year and you pay $10.00 every four months. Also, the reception is great because Page Plus Cellular uses the Verizon network (Page Plus Cellular has a contract with Verizon so there is NO extra fees or roaming charges for that).
If you get out of Verizon's cell tower/network range then Page Plus Cellular will also roam on other network providers like Sprint, AT&T etc.. So, the reception for Page Plus Cellular is usually great.
I bought my mother's cellphone from Page Plus Dealer. Here's the link to their website:

Kam, you might like using the speaker phone feature even better than headphones. It is very easy to use, push the button, set the phone down close to you and talk away. Then you don't have to hold anything or have anything in/on your ear.
I also have a verizon phone. Their coverages is excellent. All of my friends and family are "in Network" so when I call them I don't use any minutes!

Find somebody in your friends or family network that already pays a plan,,,then you can add a line to their plan for like 10 bucks a month.
Yep 120 dollars a YEAR is all I pay phone wise. That is for 300 minutes plus free weekends and nites. I dont use near that so hope they start rolling them over soon.
I have Verizon,,but I noticed reception there is pretty poor in alot of places we journeyed
Check out reception who ever you go with BEFORE you go there

Still not able to read what everyone wrote...but I will.
While out toileting Rosie in the forest I thought it would be great to have a cell phone like my friends I phone that will allow me to be on line and play games and take my mind off of lyme while I sit in the sun in my reclining camp chair.
I have tried reclining before and only last about 10 min at the most...so wondering if I had something to occupy myself if it would help.
Can't read a novel yet.
So, I stopped by the two phone places in town. Learned we can't do I phones here as ATT and is the provider.
We only have Sprint and Alltell service here.
Saw one phone that might work that is similar.
But, that is as far as I got before my brain and body said that is enough ...get thee home and lie down.

Just wondering how the prepaid phones have worked for others.
I like to travel on dirt roads out in the middle of no where. Not far from home..usually only 15 min or miles if that.
But, still.
My brain is in such a fog right now....I will check again on this phone when my brain is clearer...but thinking it just might be what I need.
