I have started taking VSL#3 DS Prescription Strength after being off antibiotics for 2 months (had a yeast infection in my ears and stopped to clear yeast).

I had an appointment with my LLMD last week. After having a painful 2 months off antibiotics (joint pain, foot pain) my LLMD put me back on antibiotics; Biaxon (sp) and Mepron (this time the insurance cleared Mepron and VSL#3 DS!!).

Seeking advice or suggestions: Do I need to take more probiotics than the one packet of VHVSL#3 DS once a day? (I take it before I go to bed)

Seems a bit excessive to take more probiotics during the day (was taking Ultra Flora 50 billion last week in addition to the nightly VSL#3 and felt like it may be too much...stomas upset).

Feel a bit better after discontinuing the Ultra Flora for the past 2 days (I had no trouble with Ultra Flora before). However, fearful of getting another yeast infection!

Was discouraged to restart antibiotics again; but, feeling better since I did, joint pain almost gone, at least so far! I had been on multiple combinations of antibiotic for a bit more than a year.

Had all of my bloodwork redone to establish a new baseline (since it will be the first time I was tested without being on medication; cholesterol continued to rise during treatment).

Waiting for all blood work esults.

Any opinions will be most appreciated.

Warm regards, p.

I take two packets a day and I'm not on antibiotics. If you were only prescribed one packet a day, then take 1/2 of it twice a day.

VSL#3 DS has 900 billion cultures per packet I believe. Since your doctor knows your history, I would ask him/her if you need more than that.

Thank you for your responses. I was prescribed 1 pkg per day. I like the idea of taking 1/2 twice a day; although find the taste nasty and once a day gets it over with!

I actually like the taste of Mepron! yikes!

best, p.

Yeah, it doesn't taste all that great! I don't mix it with anything but water due to the yeast issues.

1/2 packet doesn't taste as bad as a whole one .. [Big Grin]

I add VSL to a protein drink, and I cannot taste it at all.

Would taking more than 1 packet a day be overkill since it has 900 billion cultures per packet?

This week I have tried adding in to a yogurt starter and making yogurt with it...not he prescritpion kind the other kind, my doctor isn't familiar with VSL#3 DS so she won't write it for me. So I am trying to grow my own VSL#3 to make it last longer...also taking other probitoics too. A mix of them.

jennie.. you can take up to 3 packets a day. I take two all the time... have for the past 7 months.

I won't usually eat yogurt due to the sugar content, but I have some in my frig now... think I'll add the VSL to it next time!

The lowest sugar yogart that i've been able to find that tastes good is Dannon lite and fit. ONly 11 grams sugar.

I mix vsl3 with it all the time!

Careful with the yogurts and the artificial sweetners. If you can afford it buy organic these usually have a decent amount of natural cultures and are not as man made as the others.

I have heard good things about kefir also.

I take usually 1.5 packets a day and do well with that. Tried all sorts of other products that did not work as well.

Do you guys know that homemade yogurt is super-easy to make? Plus you can make it out of organic milk, and it's about 4 times cheaper than organic yogurt.

Hi Lymetoo,

Appreciate the info...maybe I should take more.

I guess my question is can our bodies actually process that much VSL #3 DS since it is 900 billion cultures per packet?

Fuel - here's a good link with easy directions:
http://digestiblediaries.com/2011/03/30/homemade-yogurt-macgyver-style/

Also, I like to use this particular dried starter instead of having to use old yogurt as a starter:
http://www.amazon.com/Yogourmet-Freeze-Yogurt-Starter-3-Count/dp/B001GVIS4M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1308882124&sr=8-3

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! [Smile]

My doctor prescribed VSL #3 DS at my request and insurance is covering it. So far so good with it.
Fuel: I know your doc would write you a prescription. Wonder if your insurance would cover it?
