In laymans terms (as explained to me),

D'mannose coats the lining of the bladder and urinary tract and makes it impossible for E Coli to attach/hang on.

Studies show it works for e coli based irritation.

It worked for me, and I didn't have E coli. They didn't know what I had.

It also soothes the lining of the bladder.

I worked with a herbalist.

Also avoid diet sodas, orange juice, grapefruit juice. Those irritate the lining of the bladder.

I think it keeps ANY bacteria from clinging to lining of the bladder.

Has worked perfectly for me for at least 4-5 yrs. I take it twice a day.

I used to get infections every 6-8 wks.

Berberine will also help if d-mannose doesn't work for you.

Great reading on the web I found recently since I too have been having issues for over a year and 3 different abx didn't help me.

Interstitial Cystitis as a manifestation of Lyme Disease by Deborah A. Metzger, PhD, MD.

The must have reading on this subject.

Buffy.. I'm too afraid to not take it!! I may be able to cut back to one pill a day, but I know I have had symptoms when running out of it for 2 days once.

It's the active ingredient in cranberry juice, without the acid.

Glad Pam mentions Berberine.

It sure was /is a wonderful help to my bladder issues. Nothing else comes close for me in that department. I had serious trouble / pain for at least 3 decades. After a few weeks on Berberine, unaware that it might help with bladder, uro-gentital pain, I was delighted.

Now, I've taken a few berberine breaks and the pain returns off of it. Starting back on it, after about 2 days, it's better again.

Initially, I think it was probably at least a couple weeks or longer before I noticed this nice effect.

I've never used d-Mannose, though -- it still might also be used, though, for extra help. They work a bit differently and will complement each other, although either might be of help alone.

map1131 (Pam) posted the title, author above. Here's where you can find that:

I'm interested in berberine too. wonder if I should try that with d-mannose? Any thoughts?

I've read that berberine can increase urinary frequency and that is my main symptoms with IC so does anyone know how long the increased frequency will last? and will it help with that?

Also how large are the berberine pills? I still have swallowing issues. If the pill is about the size of a prenatal vitamin or smaller it won't be a huge problem but anything bigger I'd rather not waste my money.

D-Mannose works great! I take the powdered form. When I am really in pain, I take a dose every hour with a glass of water. In a couple of hours pain is gone, but I keep taking doses several times a day for 10 days. It works better than abx, in my opinion.

You can take it regularly as a precautionary measure, too, if you are sexually active. That's the cause of most bladder infections.

If you will go to Swanson's Vitamins and look for the NOW brand, you will save a ton of money.

sickofthepain, berberine helped my bladder/urinary infection and my bowels.

Start slow and work your way up. I herxed big time from only 400mg a day berberine. I believe the symptoms were from kill off of yeasty things.

IC symptoms can also be protomyxzoa. There is a list of symptoms below (you don't have to have all of them to have proto).

I"ve also read that aloe can help by coating the bladder...there is one company that takes a particular ingredient out of the aloe that causes diarrhea. Does anyone know of another product that is comparable?

I was told to stay away from the juice because it has acid in it.(but if you know of an aloe juice that doesn't have acid, let me know!)
