I've been taking oral doxycicline 400 mg and ceftin 200 mg daily for a whopping six weeks for Lyme. Some of my symptoms have gotten better.
Now I'm developing a yeast problem from the abx. My tummy is puffy and seems to get bigger with each meal.
I'm doing the anti-yeast diet and taking probiotics after each meal. I have some homeopathic stuff for yeast a chiro gave me that I spray under my tongue, too.
I've noticed I'm very tired again and the smells of things are starting to bother me. Food is just not appealing right now.
I've been reading about antibiotics and chronic yeast problems and leaky gut and all the problems with food allergies leaky gut might cause. Yikes!
I don't want that!
I almost feel like I have to choose between one conditon or the other and neither is appealing.
What if I knock out the Lyme with the abx but end up toxic from a systemic yeast infection that is hard to cure? Or incurable?
Or stop the abx too soon and never get rid of the Lyme?
Someone give me their thoughts. I feel a little backed into a corner at the moment.
Is it as hard to get rid of chronic yeast as Lyme?

um, chronic yeast symptoms will never ever be as bad as what chronic lyme and company can do.
treat the lyme along with the yeast and when treatment is coming to an end and you have a slight yeast problem it can be solved with anti fungals and a proper diet.
cheers

If you don't get all the lyme it comes back with a vengeance- so you want to make sure you get rid of the lyme.
don't take acidophilus too close to abx- I it seems that some of the abx will wasted killing the acidophilus you just took! Not only that, but subsequently the yeast might even still have an opportunity to overgrow, due to the lack of acidophilus and other probiotics.
Yes, with Lyme, it's hard to time it when it seems like you're ALWAYS taking mountains of antibiotics. The most important time for acidophilus is at night. So don't take your last dose of abx too late. Yoghurt "with live cultures" suc as 'Stoneyfield' or 'Dannon', contains acidophilus and other "probiotics" (live beneficial organisms that prevent yeast and other nasties) so this is very good to take, too.
I believe that grapefruit seed extract is also quite anti- yeast, but thats based on several things I read whose source I am not familiar with.
And if you have trouble with yeast over-growth, this is MUCH easier to resolve than lyme! There are several "standard" meds to address yeast, that many Lyme patients take at some point. (Note- I'm pretty sure always have some yeast in our gut; it's when it gets out of balance that it causes problems.)
A side note: When I first got sick from the lyme, some people thought it might be "systemic" yeast since I had had abx. Some of the symptoms can apparently be similar. Oh- that reminds me- based on that ...'diagnoses'..., someone familiar with "naturopathic medicine" advised me to take capryllic acid, which I did try, but it seemed to make my symptoms worse (because the untreated lyme was getting worse). Thus, capryllic acid is presumably a natural remedy for yeast, if it should indeed crop up.

Probiotics are vital but they have never been enough for me when on abx (antibiotics). Adding the Rx Diflucan may be necessary but it can be hard on the liver.
I have found Olive Leaf Extract to be a wonderful antifungal and it can be taken during abx treatment. It will not upset your stomach and is a cool herb so it is not stimulating.
Allicin, too, is fabulous and many LLMDs incorporate it into abx treatment. Take in the middle of a meal - &/or take a small part of a garlic clove with food (working up slowly to a whole clove in the middle of a meal). I would not take garlic or allicin too late in the day until you know how stimulating this hot herb will be for you. If you have a delicate stomach, go slowly at first or try Olive Leaf extract first.

You might also search Pau d'Arco at the Rain-Tree site. It is a wonderful antifungal.

The yeast can be kept in check you just have to work hard at it. All of my life I have ha candida issues. I'm taking high doses of abx and every day I have to try to control the yeastie beasties.
Here is what works for me. Diflucan is great, but I seem to have grown resistant after taking it long-term. It does work the best for systemic yeast. It also may harm liver with prolonged use.
I currently take every few days powdered Vit C Calcium Ascorbate to bowel tolerance. Cleans you out, helps fight yeast, and boosts immune system. Capryllic Acid is great also, I take 5-6 pills a day. Wild oregano oil is also good along with raw garlic. I take PB8 probiotics and Florastor.
Do not eat any sugar, natural or refined. My diet is very strict right now, I eat mainly vegetables, protein and lemons, limes, avocados and nuts.

Thanks everyone. I think I just got scared because I was reading on a message board for ppl with chronic candida and some sounded really close to death with it.
I've got the diet, OLE, and the probiotics but I need to take more probiotics and watch the timing of everything better.
Would it be overkill to add grapeseed and other stuff?
