Hey everyone-

I went to Urgent Care yesterday because I kept having episodes that went a little bit like this:

I'd get really dizzy
So I'd sit down
Then all of a sudden it'd feel like my brain would stop working for a second, so it felt like my brain would stop, my heart would stop, and my breathing would slow down.
My muscles in my arms would get really stiff and my body would feel weird
Then I'd gasp for a breath and feel like I was going to go unconscious

They had NO idea what to do with me in Urgent care. My heart rate and blood pressure dipped low, then came back up, then went a little high, then stabilized. They didn't know what was happening or why, so they just did some blood tests on minerals and sent me home to wait for the results.

So I just got the results back now and they say that my phosphorous is really high, and my magnesium is a little elevated.

Does anyone know what high phosphorous and slightly high magnesium means? Does anyone know what it causes and what I can do about it? It's hard to know what to do because it's the weekend. Do I go back in?

Thank you!

Little,

I hope you are feeling better. Keep us posted. I don't know anything about your results, but hopefully it isn't anything serious.

Thank you so much Shandy. I've got an urgent/emergency appointment with my LLMD this afternoon (he squeezed me in, thank heavens) so I will run all of this by him.

Feelfit, thank you for the kind words!

So I thought I'd just update. I've gotten worse (hence the urgent appointment with my LLMD).

I now have extreme nausea, loose stool (and if you know me, this is QUITE out of the ordinary for me lol) and EXTREME head pressure.

Does anyone ever feel like their brain is swelling? I have this intense head pressure and occasional shooting pains that make me feel like my brain is too big for my skull. No exaggeration. It's all alarming, but suprisingly I'm staying relatively calm. I know if I freak out it'll make the heart symptoms even worse.

Thanks everyone.

Little,

Let us know what happens. I have the head pressure 24/7 along with the head pain. Not fun. So see what your doc can do for that.

Thinking of you,
Feelfit

Did you overdo a stool softener/laxative?

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0689/is_7_55/ai_n16546242/pg_2

"When increased fiber intake fails to alleviate symptoms of constipation, patients are often prescribed an osmotic laxative (eg, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium citrate, sodium phosphate, or polyethylene glycol [PEG]) (SOR: B), which promotes water secretion in the intestines. (4,8,15) However, several days may pass before the laxatives take effect, and they are indicated only for short-term use in patients with occasional constipation. (1)

Common adverse effects include abdominal cramping, bloating, and flatulence. (4,10,17) More serious adverse effects include ***hypermagnesemia, hyperphosphatemia,*** hypercalcemia, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypovolemia, and diarrhea (1,16); the incidences of these events were not reported."

Phosphate toxicity from a laxative? Calcium maybe needed.

http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=2990038

This can happen in kids too.

HYPERPHOSPHATEMIA

Skeletal fractures or disease, kidney failure, hypoparathyroidism, hemodialysis, diabetic ketoacidosis, acromegaly, *systemic infection*, and intestinal obstruction can all cause phosphate retention and build-up in the blood.

The disorder occurs concurrently with hypocalcemia.

Individuals with mild hyperphosphatemia are typically asymptomatic, but signs of severe hyperphosphatemia include:

tingling in hands and fingers

muscle spasms and cramps

and cardiac symptoms...

Let us know how you're doing.

I had high phosphorus once and nothing was done about it. I don't think it's high now.
