when my daughter was about 5ish...she complained about her feet falling asleep...this happened a lot...(tingling sensation/numbness)
she also looked pale sometimes for no reason...dark circles under her eyes....on and off...
stomach aches.... saying things like...her legs were tired...(weakness)
falling a sleep a lot...
I know it's hard to not freak out... one thing you could do is start writing things down...
this helped us out a lot and helped the doctor too....
freak out on us....here on LymeNet....we can take it!!!

Thanks so much - My husband is in total denial about this, so I have to be doubly thorough and careful.
I think he's terrified of watching my little one go through what I've been going through.
It's frightening enough when it's you, but when suddenly it's your child . . . there just aren't words.
Here's why I'm thinking my LLMD might be right:
-my son is very, very emotional. He flips out over the slightest thing and runs crying to his room
-his ears turn red for no apparent reason. Drs have no explanation for this
-he has asthma and was in NICU for a week with breathing problems at birth
-he's missed several weeks' worth of school due to various illnesses, most of which were diagnosed as viral
-he complains of various aches and pains. I've actually thought maybe he's copying me, but what if he's not?
-he sleeps a lot more than my other son did at his age, but I just thought that was because he's different
-he gets a lot of headaches, which drs have attributed to allergies
-he also has dark circles under his eyes on most days, which has also been attributed to allergies
-he has an unexplained rash on both his ankles that has been there all his life, but it doesn't seem to bother him
-he's extremely sensitive to loud noise - really can't stand it
-periodic diarrhea with no medical explanation
Now that I'm typing this out, it seems so long!
I'll be making a symptom list first thing in the morning - thanks mtree.
If it makes a difference, I've been diagnosed with Borrelia, Babesia and Bartonella.

Kelly-
I am sorry to say that there is no question in my mind (but I'm not an MD) that he has lyme/coinfections.
I have three young children with many of the same symptoms. (Dark circles, headaches, noise sensitivity, crying/emotional behavior, continuous sickness, asthma, random aches...they had all of those.
Also - the red ears are definitely lyme. Both of my boys got that and now after a year of treatment they rarely get the red ears.
I hope you are able to start treatment soon. I'm sure it will help! You probably should track his symptoms daily so that you can help the LLMD figure out which coinfections to treat for along with the lyme. I find it helps me a lot.

Hi Kelly -
I was in a hurry when I posted my last note...so forgot to mention that kids do very well with treatment.
They can be "cured" according to our LLMD, the famous Dr. J. I know it is devastating to think your child is sick, but you are doing the right thing to look into this.
I am seeing progress with all of my children and believe they will all be cured. They have tolerated the meds well and have been in treatment for a year.

thanks tickbattler, I've also been wondering how difficult it is to treat a child who was born with these infections.
One of my concerns is how well he'll handle the meds, but I guess I need to stop worrying about it.
I'm going to call the dr on Monday and just get things started.
As I read more and learn more, I too am convinced that he has lyme and some of the coinfections.
This just breaks my heart.
Thanks so much for helping me - all of you!

Kelly,
It is heartbreaking.
I prayed over and over while waiting for my children's Igenex results.
"Please Lord. Please don't let my babies have this.".
Got the results in my hand.
Cried for about 20 minutes....devestated for them and me.
Then I went about the business of getting them treated.
My son's ears would turn red too.
My daughter had classic aches/pains, fatigue.
They are both doing well.
They can live a normal life if we get this stuff.
Hang in there.
My children did well on meds.
Better than I.
Sending you positive thoughts and prayers.
Just a FYI though.
When my herxed, it was like a tornado emotionally letting loose.
Just hard to seperate that this is Lyme and/or co-infections,
And not let their behavior ignite mine.
Hugs,
Geneal

There's no need to freak out and I hope you can relax a bit.
Has he had any testing? None of these symptoms will necessarily add up to a diagnosis of Lyme.
But if they do, or if the testing is positive, it is true that a kid his age will probably do well.
One of mine, at age 8 or 9, had very positive testing, and did less than 3 months of treatment (amox. for 1, then tetracycline for 2). She is 16 and fine.
Another of my kids is not doing well, but after trying treatment for 18 months, we don't think she actually had Lyme, but something else.
Again, some of the things you listed are normal for a kid that age, and some of the things sound typical of allergies. So it might not be Lyme, but if it is, there is plenty of hope.
Save the freaking out for the future, and maybe it won't be needed.
p.s. have you addressed food allergies or dnne any dietary changes for his symptoms? I would see a nutritionist or alternative allergist before putting him on meds that he may very well be sensitive or even allergic to.
