I would take it with food (in the middle of a meal), at least for starters. It can be a rough one, so the food helps. It's rough not so much on the stomach but from the herx standpoint, so food will help buffer that a bit.

After you get used to it, you may be able to take on an empty stomach but ask your LLMD what they think best.

* Be sure your liver support is also in place. Milk Thistle, ALA, etc.

* Beta Carotene containing foods are vital.

When taking art, also be sure to get good beta carotene all through the day. That will help you better tolerate the art. Carrots, greens . . . with every meal. Greens with breakfast, too. Really. It will make this easier for you.

That is because art uses the liver detox path, Cytochrome P-450 and that is often very stressed with lyme. Natural beta carotene helps keep the level of porphyrins lower.

When the C P-450 pathway is stressed, more toxins buildup in the body and that includes something called porphyrins. To keep those down, beta carotene is the best help. And that will keep you feel as good as you can.

Thank you, Keebler.

Greens for breakfast....hmmmm? I will give it a try, but does not sound appetizing at all. LOL! If it helps, that's what counts though.

LLMD said to take with food, but I know most people take on empty stomach. I even read that some think it is useless if not taken on empty stomch. I need to learn to listen to my LLMD!

Don't forget to take Artemesinin with grapefruit juice. Per Dr. K., Artemisinin provokes the intestinal wall to secrete an enzyme which estroys the medication before it can be absorbed. This process builds up over 3 weeks. After a one week pause the enzyme has disappeared and takes another 3 weeks
to reemerge. Grapefruit juice prevents formation of this enzyme.

I used to simply open the capsules and add it into the Lyme Cocktail.

You may want to look up the Klinghardt Lyme Cocktail (google).

Take care.

I had no idea about the grapefruit juice. Does this need to be done even if pulsing art for 3 days on and 4 days off?

I used to take it about 1/2 hour to an hour prior to eating so it would be more effective. It never bothered my stomach.

I take most herbs that way unless it's specified to take with food. I think they are more effective if you take them away from food. Just my opinion, though.

I read that artemisinin reaches full effectiveness in the blood in about 30 minutes after you take it. That's when it peaks & then it wears off. I figured eating may interfere with it's effectiveness.

I took it one day on & a day or 2 off. This is what I derived from using a dowsing method. It was my particular dosing so I don't know i it would apply to others.

I believe that the CFS Dr. C also does it this way.

Dr Z says to take Artemisinin on empty stomach,
he says that is most important. Dr B says 2-3 wks on and 1 week off the Artemisinin. Most everyone says it needs to be taken with something else. I am taking it with doxycycline and levaquin right now and it is helping. I was taking it for several months with bactrim and that was helping as well, but my folate got too low and have had to break from that. Dr Z says not to worry about grapefruit juice, that it is more important to have stomach be empty when taking it. My experience says Dr Z is right about that.

Grapefruit juice can be toxic with certain meds do your homework with whatever else your taking.

Grapefruit juice blocks special enzymes in the wall of the small intestine that actually destroys many medications and prevents their absorption into the body.

Thus, smaller amounts of the drugs get into the body than are ingested. When the action of this enzyme is blocked, more of the drugs get into the body and the blood levels of these medications increase.

This can lead to toxic side effects from the medications.

Yeah, you have to study the situation with grapefruit juice & what drugs it interacts with. It's complicated.

It's also important to study the role of iron with artemesia.

I posted a huge thread about artemesia earlier this year with lots of info. Do a search of this website if you are interested.
