Only 23% of atovaquone in malarone is absorbed as opposed to mepron which is 47% That is the reason Mepron is preferred.
I thought I read somewhere that crushing Malarone helps absorption but maybe I am mistaken. It can be crushed for children who can't swallow pills. They recommend mixing it in condensed milk.
It is very hard to crush so I hope it is worth the effort. If I mix it in fat, like peanut butter or coconut oil, would it help make it more available? It is so expensive I hate that 3/4 of it is going to waste.
Any ideas? Has anyone tried it?

THis is probably just a coincidence buy last night I crushed my three pills, mixing it in about 3 TB peanut butter. I got a bad headache and felt pretty bad. I felt nervous, had trouble sleeping.
But this morning I am MUCH better. Knock on wood. The dizziness is nearly gone and I do not feel like my knees are going to buckle when I walk. In fact, yesterday I literally had to sit down on the ground while taking a walk as I felt I would black out.
Maybe it will all come back this afternoon but I am hoping it won't. If only 23% is absorbed that means my body is eliminating $42 out the back door. Those of you with insurance probably don't care but this is all out of pocket for me.

Nefferdun...you should read some of Dr. S from FL opinion on Malarone. He prefer's it because of the other ingredient with Mepron doesn't have. This second ingredient is only available in Mepron and does big things in preventing / killing Babesia.

Thanks bcb, I have his book on babesia and there is an update but I don't remember reading that. Some people have said their LLMD's prefer Malarone for treating babesia duncani. This is hitting me hard. That is for sure.
I am going to continue crushing it. I mix it in peanut butter. I hope it helps my body to absorb more of it.

I did Malarone for 4 days, and switched to Mepron. I have not herxed from Mepron, but the Malarone made me miserable. I wonder if the Mepron is even working

I have a different total experience from Mepron to Malarone myself. I wonder why. Mepron I never herxed on but higher and higher doses I felt better and better. The only time I got to feel better but no herx. And Malarone I can feel somewhat of a herx even though not major but my body does not like it so much. Only can use that word icky. My body feels annoyed or frustrated or icky like blood poisoned feeling. Had that feeling on Biaxin. I thinks sometimes the fillers or how the med is made may affect us each differently and that can make us feel a certain way that is not about the actual drug. But just my feeling about it.
Who knows.
I say that because of how I can sense smell taste and body oder that is different with various drugs but I do not feel like its the actual drug.?

nefferdun - Thanks for the report on crushing Malarone. I am adding it to my Mepron/Zith for this round. I am going to crush mine and take them with fats!
I am also adding Tinidazole. I'll keep you posted.

Supposedly, the other ingredient in malarone "boosts" the atovaquone. Some think it is more effective for ducani. I take 4 malarone and 1/2 tsp mepron.
