The following are links to a few threads in which herbal medicine is discussed for Lyme and yeast- mostly those herbs from Stephen Buhner's protocol from his book Healing Lyme, along with a few other protocols relying primarily on herbal treatment.

Some guidelines:
-Let's keep this thread concise and only about herbs (some discussions cover more but are mostly about herbs)- Let's keep it from becoming too long to read.
-Please post only links and brief descriptions. -Please dont post advice or make this thread into a discussion. Let's keep it organized.
- Please don't post about other alternative treatments if they're not herbal (ie rife, lightworks, prayer, etc. Sorry.)

Please note: although these herbs can be purchased without a prescription, there can be side effects and you should do this under a doctor's direction. Some posters below indicate they have had serious side effects from some of the herbs. Do not take these herbs without AT LEAST reading Stephen Buhner's book. This thread does NOT give you enough information to self-treat safely!!!

Remember that some of the positive experiences on this forum are the same people posting over and over again. Not everyone has the same experiences with herbal treatment or herbal-and-antibiotic treatment. Some of the posters who report positive experiences are doing many other forms of treatment besides Buhner herbs alone.

The Buhner book contains a 30-page bibliography of studies which support his conclusions, and those references are a good start for more information that may help you evaluate whether to try this treatment.

Our testimonials on the Internet are not a substitute for a decent LLMD's advice and guidance.

below is a single category for semi-related topics that were hard to separate:
Dr Klinghardt's treatment for Lyme, Detoxification (not just Klinghardt's ideas), Chlorella, metals/amalgams/mercury

thread about a 34-page paper by Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD PhD (Seattle), who incorporates Buhner's protocol (along with detoxification, treatment of coinfections and parasites, various naturapathic methods, salt/C, and many other treatment methods)
http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=050656

Gigi writing about detoxification with Cilantro (I think this is from Dr Klinghard's research):
http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=050040

long thread about antibiotics not working in a very long-term ABX case- people suggest/discuss various things that might be the problem or that may help. Generally not antibiotics focused thread. Discusses Rechtsregulat, hypercoagulation, root canals as a source of problems, more. Very conflicting advice in this thread:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=045476

Babesia and herbs (and more): compares Dr Klinghard and Buhner protocol, discusses salt/C, etc:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=048277

Old, mid-2005 thread that predates the Healing Lyme book- this one covers alternatives to antibiotics, which includes very detailed post from Gigi about the many therapies that she and her husband followed, from Dr Klinghofer's protocols (dr K has since then taken on a lot of suggestions form Buhner and other research that has come to light since that time):

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=034069#000015
Old lengthy posts from Gigi about garlic and other things in relation to metals detox and other detox:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=042044
chlorella:
lots of information about chlorella:

member experience with Buhner and doxycycline:

"doxy and nausea" thread- herbal, accupressure, and "seaband" remedies for nausea:

Thanks. There is some fun reading in here... especially the part about Buhner's appearance. He seemed so cerebral in print!

Oh yeah, and reading these older posts makes me wish I had found this forum a year ago.

Thank you for updating us with some posts, but a request:

-please don't post advice in this thread, it'll become unreadably long. Please post links to other discussions or websites, and a short description of the link.

-please leave this thread for listing of HERBAL treatments only, not other alternative methods. I'm trying to keep this thread as a herb-specific resource.

Ie, please don't post links about antibiotics-only, provigil, lightworks, low-dose naltrexone, 880NM, Rife, prisms, pendulums, diflucan only, prayer, etc. I know some threads discuss all of the above.

I'm trying to keep this readable and on-topic. I'm not saying I have an opinion on the other modalities, just that they are not herbs and this isn't a thread for ALL alternative medicine stuff.

Couple of good threads recently (note that I have also edited in a few 2008 discussion links into previous posts in this thread):

Keebler talking about Cats' Claw (with links to abstracts of studies on the herb) and Bromelain for inflammation. Luvs2ride followed by talking about diet and rheumatoid arthritis, leaky gut syndrome, glutathione deficiency and detoxification from killing of LYme bacteria, and much info about herbal and doctors who used 'complementary and alternative' treatment to figure out what Luvs2ride's issues were:

2010 threads
There are fewer people discussing Buhner Protocol on Lymenet now than there were 4 years ago when I started this thread. Certain new products have sprung up- usually expensive 'protocols' based on the Buhner system but with lower dosing. More users are now using cryptolepsis for babesia with much success at controlling symptoms.

Much of the Buhner discussion is over at the lyme_aid_buhner yahoogroup, and Buhner still writes his column on Planet Thrive and answers questions there. See the first post in this thread for links to both sites.

I think I can now keep up with the lower-volume of herbal discussion and will try to add more of them here.

user experiences:

Mazou has been posting about having some good success with Buhner core protocol and now with additional supplements:

BLT ('bartonella-lyme tincture') formula (not sure where this is available, just through some practitioners apparently)

Maria,

You asked me a long time ago if I wanted to post here and I was not organized. Well, here's a sort of annotated bibliography and a few questions and comments that I post if someone new asks about supplements:

=========================

-
Do you have a LLMD? Are you on a treatment protocol?

Are you gluten-free? A gluten-free diet will help tremendously and most LLMDs recommend this.

Not an herb, but the nutritional supplement, MAGNESIUM is the number one supplement for pain reduction. Fish oil, too.

For LIVER SUPPORT - the most common supplement is Milk Thistle but there are others. As the toxin from lyme, and also the chemicals from Rx can be hard on liver, supplements to support and protect the liver are essential.

Here's a composite I've made of many things to consider. Not all herbal formulas are on this, but most. It's not so easy as just taking this or that. Some herbs are for support; other are more for antimicrobial action. Herbs are nearly always in a combined formula. And your LLMD should be aware of everything you take as it could alter the effectiveness of the Rx plan.

If your LLMD is knowledge with supplements, great. Some are aware of the nutritional supplements such as vitamins and minerals (magnesium, etc.) and others also have knowledge in a few specific herbal supplements such as Milk Thistle.

You might want to consult a LL ND (naturopathic doctor) or other professional with training and licensing in this area. A good LLMD will have a working relationship and should be able to refer you to someone who will fit your needs in these complementary areas. And, be sure any LLND is truly LL and ILADS-educated, and works well with your LLMD.

A ND who is not LL (that is ILADS-educated) simply does not have the knowledge to be treating lyme/TBD (tick-borne disease) patients. They may be great at treating other patients, but lyme patients deserve doctors (of all types) to be thoroughly educated about all aspects of TBD (tick-borne disease).

Now, they may not go by the ILADS guidelines, but they should know the work of all the authors listed on this page - and that of Alan MacDonald, too, with his work on biofilms. And the work of Garth Nicolson with mycoplasma.

All this is to compare and contrast - and to be sure all the bases are covered. Rx protocols are included for background but most also incorporate supplements.

================================

* This explains WHY you need an ILADS LLMD or ILADS LL ND (naturopathic doctor) to guide your treatment protocol.

www.clinicaladvisor.com/Controversy-continues-to-fuel-the-Lyme-War/article/117160/

CONTROVERSY CONTINUES TO FUEL THE "LYME WAR" - 2007

" . . .To treat Lyme disease for a comparable number of life cycles, treatment would need to last 30 weeks. . . ."

"...If all cases were detected and treated in the early stages of Lyme disease, the debate over the diagnosis and treatment of late-stage disease would not be an issue, and devastating rheumatologic, neurologic, and cardiac complications could be avoided..."

And one more set:
--------------------

One book that may help with understanding how the body systems work is:

THE ONE EARTH HERBAL SOURCEBOOK (Tillotson)

Most of it is viewable on line here: http://oneearthherbs.squarespace.com/

MENU on left of page will take you to the BASICS OF HERBS - and beyond.

Amazon also carries it. This book does not discuss lyme or TBI protocol, still it is an excellent resource for so much, especially understand our liver, etc. Diets for certain kinds of illness are suggested.

Repeat: this book does NOT discuss any treatment for lyme (other than a passing reference to sarsaparilla at http://tinyurl.com/2eeqct ).

Still, it is an excellent place to start for understanding so much about human and plant life and how they work together.
