The pills contain WAY LESS CFU's than the packets. The taste of the packets is not bad, not good.

The VSL capsules are the same high quality probiotic, they work well. You just have to take more of them to equal the same dose that comes in the packets.
In my opinion, the powder in the packets smells and tastes nasty! Like stinky, dirty feet!!! (This was the RX VSL3 DS strength) I could not stomach it and ended up throwing away a whole box or two when they were long past expired. Sad, I know.
I tried tricking my tasted buds, mixing the powder probiotic with all kinds of yogurt, milk, pudding, juice, whatever I could think of but I could not keep it down. It made me gag.
I don't usually have trouble taking any kind of medicine so I was really surprised that this bothered me so much. I think that it was the smell that got to me and made me gag more so than the taste.
So if you want to try the packets, just buy one box. Make sure you like it before you spend your money and are stuck taking it!

I got tired of adding the packet to water and drinking it. I put it in my breakfast protein drink now, and I cannot taste it at all.

Make sure you get the unflavored DSL 3.
"As far as I can determine, the prescription strength form of VSL#3, VSL#3 DS, is gluten free since it is unflavored. The flavored form of VSL#3 powder contains maltose that according to the manufacturer, is derived from barley. Though they report the maltose is highly processed to the point they believe no gluten residues remain they cannot insure it is gluten-free."
I got a yeast infection while taking it. It does taste gross too. The unflavored packets do not taste bad. I take two packets a day. Plus S boulardi and theralac.

VSL does wonders for me and as equally potent is Kefir. I have tried going on for days without VSL and only using Kefir and it works like a charm.
I stop the Kefir or VSL and my stool starts to soften progressively.

I love the VSL DS. I get 3 packets a day and my insurance pays for it. I usually take at least two with two other probiotics.
I dip slices of apple in the VSL DS with vanilla protein powder. Or, I eat it with apple sauce or yogurt with fruit. You won't taste it if you dislike the taste.

I've been taking VSL DS for a year and don't mind the taste or smell. In fact, I wondered what people are talking about. It is so bland. I put mine in a little bit of natural applesauce.
I get by on just one packet a day with a capsule probiotic before bed.
I pay a $30 copay. I feel very lucky it is covered. I did just learn though that perhaps the script could be written for 3 a day. Rite Aid will love me as it takes so much refrigerator space. The nice new smaller pouches save room in the refrigerator.
