Can anyone tell me their experience with this. I am so perplexed.

Once in 2011 I was dx, with Klebsiella and Citrobacter, via Genova stool testing. Later in 2011 I was dx with just Citobacter. Both times Cipro was the appropriate abx for the condition. One time I remember being on Theralac and the other time I wasn't on any probiotics, so I am not sure if probiotics has anything to do with this.

I was recently having some GI issues so my LLMD, tested me again through Metametrix (Genova merged). It showed no overgrowth of any type of bacteria, just low levels of good bacteria, along with some kind of Yeast "not pathogenic to humans"...whatever that means. I started Theralac and VSL and my GI symptoms got worse. Because of my history with the above infections, my LLMD, put me on Cipro again, and the symptoms seem to be going away.

My question is, what happens after I go off Cipro? I know I have to get a colonoscopy to see if there is any diverticulitis brewing, but I don't understand what is going on with my gut.

How much probiotic are we supposed to take when we aren't on abx for Lyme, and what strains? I read where too much probiotic can cause overgrowths, but when we are on herbs, one would think that they are killing off some good bacteria as well.

Right now I am taking ProBioMax Daily from Xymogen and S. Boulardi while on Cipro. Do we just go on something like Culterelle, or Align for maintenance?

Thanks

I would take plenty of probiotics. I'm not sure Culterelle or Align are good enough. I'm not impressed with them myself.

I would be willing to bet that your gut was worse due to the dairy in the VSL and Theralac. That happened to me. I now buy Custom Probiotics because they are dairy free.

As for SIBO.. My GI DR just "decided" I had that 2 yrs ago and his treatment of two weeks of abx MADE MY YEAST GO OUT OF CONTROL. I've been suffering every since. It's really bad. So be forewarned.

Personally, I take 100 billion CFU's per day. I am not on any abx.

Lymetoo....how did he decide that? Did he do any testing?

ProbioMax is dairy, gluten and soy free.

Strange though that taking the Cipro would make me feel better. Something must be up bacteria wise.

I was nervous to start Cipro for this very reason...the yeast beast. The levels that showed on Metametrix were very low, so my LLMD, thinks that a short course of Cipro, given my history, will be ok. Only a short course.

edited to add: prior Genova testing showed no yeast at all. So confusing.

Thanks

Nope, he just said maybe I had SIBO. I think they say that because they have no clue. And you know WHAT!? I do believe that my presenting problem was actually YEAST and even I did not recognize it.

So I'm now battling like crazy to get back to square one.

I would never trust a test for yeast. Go by symptoms.
