Hello, I was wondering if anyone here with sulfa allergies has undergone desensitization for it. I have had extreme issues with the rifampin and quinilones while trying to treat my bartonella; when I tried Bactrim however, it was definitely the most effective and had the least side effects. Well that is, until ten days after starting it I had a horrific allergic reaction. So seeing as this is most likely my only option to treat the bartonella I started looking into desensitization but couldn't find any other lymies who've undergone it, or much info on its effectiveness. If anyone has any info they could throw my way that would be amazing. Thanks!

Are you sure it was an allergy and not a Herxheimer reaction?
I THOUGHT I was allergic to sulfa meds because I got a weird rash and threw up as a child when I took Ceclor as a kid (this was during a weird, unexplained "flu").
But during treatment I took all kinds of sulfa meds with no issue...that is, after Mr. Herxheimer went away!
Of course, people to have real allergies, and that may be the case for you. Just wanted to throw it out there.

Aw, bummer! Bactrim is good stuff. A clever doc can work around your allergy, though :-)
