Does anyone have experience with IV Doxy? My Dr wants to get me started on it and I am a bit concerned. He initially wanted me to do a midline catheter, but it is my understanding that Doxy is very caustic and cannot be administered that way. When I called and brought this point up, he said a midline is fine but if I prefer a PICC, I can do that. That made me feel a little uneasy with this Dr - am I overreacting?
Also, even through the PICC, I am nervous about somehow burning the area where the PICC dumps the medicine.
Any advice would be appreciated

I have experience with IV Doxycyline administered through a PICC line. I haven't had any complications so far. And the Doxy is doing its job really well.
The tip of a PICC line ends in a large vein above the heart where the blood runs very fast. That way the risk of tissue damage is minimised.
I think the selection of the right catheter also depends on how long your course will be. I also have Doxy administered through a short infusion cannula in my arm occasionally and my veins are fine. Thrombophlebitis may occur if Doxycyline is given over prolonged periods of time. For a short course a midline will generally be fine, but for longer treatment a PICC line is better.
Best wishes,
Notti

Doxy can be caustic, but was very helpful for me. The PICC or the port will allow your veins to survive these medicines.
The port is a bit more invasive, but probably more durable in the long run. I had a port for 5 years and regret taking it out, but I knew I couldn't keep it forever.
The PICC is not as invasive and would probably not stay in as long. Also, it may be more difficult to take showers etc. I could take a shower and swim when I was not accessed.

I wouldn't worry. You probably aren't going to feel comfortable with any of the process but once you have it in, it will be second nature. I'd get the PICC. I did IV doxy for 2 yrs, with no problems.

When I was prescribed IV Doxy, I was told it was caustic to the veins. My doctor advised getting a port which is what I did.
