Weird and worried.
I ordered a Mag. serum test. I know - the RBC is better, but........
Results: Range 1.6 - 2.3 2.4 High
A year ago it was 1.9 infusing 1-2 grams/week IV.
Previously 1.7 for serum - normal/mid range on RBC.
I stopped IV Mag. about a year ago - started taking 250-500 mg/day Mag. Oxide. I know - not the best source.
I had tried Mag. oil and lotion but it seemed to knock me out.
Last week I rubbed some on my thighs - having not used the topical in a long time. A few days later had labs done. I expected low levels.
Not knowing the Mag. was high - the night after the test - I rubbed on some more Mag. The next day was awful. I felt drugged - almost comatose.
How could this be? Mag. builds up in the body? Mag. Oxide?
Thanks.

- It's a bit like taking a blood sugar test right after a meal.
I would not be concerned with a serum test within hours of taking mag. oxide. It shows nothing about what actually gets taken up by the cells and more about what's not being taken up and about to be washed out.
The kind of magnesium you take is doing little help, though, as it just does not get absorbed very well. So when you can you might switch to a different kind. It's a lot to trudge through yet some really detailed info here on how to judge the right amounts and the best sources for the symptoms you want to support.
Magnesium Glycinate is a nice one that is well absorbed. If money is the reason for the oxide form, better to get a better form and just take less to make it stretch.

- Another way - a better way, I think - is to get magnesium in chlorella and spirulina along with all kinds of other key nutrients and lots of chlorophyll.
Saves a lot of money in the long run and covers so many more bases.

- As for the oil, I've never used mag. oil but if you feel ill after using, it seems that the dose was too high, perhaps, or it's just not right for you for whatever reason.
You say: " . . . rubbed on some more Mag. The next day was awful. I felt drugged - almost comatose. . . ."
Wondering about other factors, if by chance, had that been AFTER a hot bath, too much heat makes me feel that way, too, just by itself. -

Keebs - thanks. Thinking about this. The past six months I have only take Mag. Ox. I tried the Mag oil and lotion a few times - sporadically. A wee bit days before this recent Mag. test. I have always taken Mag. Ox. Mostly daily - except for a few months last year when I did IV Mag. Previous serum Mag was 1.7 - on Mag Ox. It was 1.9 while on IV Mag. I was very surprised at the slight elevation above reference range. I rubbed on more Mag. lotion after the test - hours after a shower. I know that stuff knocks me out. No more of it for me. My kidney/liver funcion is fine. Wondering........having read the body uses Mag to produce VitD. ???? I don't supplement with D. Over the winter got no sun at all. Could that be a factor? Mag. not being used to produce/convert VitD??? I did the Mag. serum test again - two weeks after the elevated level. This time with Quest - ref. range 1.5 - 2.5. I was 2.4. Had not taken any supplemental Mag. since two weeks prior - after the Mag. lotion about put me a coma. Had I known the levels were high I would not have done that!!
Also.....have read where some folks can't tolerate Mag. supplementation - due to adrenal fatigue. ??? Sorry - so wordy/confusing - I may revise this later - so tired.............
