This may or may not be what you have going on but ... I had a painful spot on my scalp that hurt to the touch and the pain
went deep down into my skull. I put some Maximum Strength Desitin on it, reapplied it the next day and today, it's gone.

Another thing that I'm going to do is take a Pregnenolone + a DHEA every morning and night for a while and see how it goes. A few months ago I had an outbreak of ACA (Bart
related) and since then I've been taking one Pregnenolone every time a new outbreak threatens but since this problem happened in my scalp and skin manifestations are usually
related to Bart, I'm increasing the Pregnenolone. Pregnenolone causes the body to manufacture its own steroidal hormones and treats skin problems. (People with Lyme avoid steroids but I've not had a problem with it.)

Absolutely it can be encephalitis. Caused by too many toxins or infection, or both.
Head can sometimes even feel "mushy" for lack of a better term. OR it can feel very hard and stiff- something that I describe as being like a bowling ball.
Bobby pins and curlers- I remember those days! I still can't wear anything in my hair like a clip, barrette, or bobby pin. Within hours my head feels 2 times its normal size and it pounds with pain in the area of the barrette.
Now NO laughing, but sometimes my butt does this too.
When I was still able to wear blue jeans, after several hours the seams of the pockets and weight of the zipper would be too "heavy" and the pressure touching my skin would make me go down with pain.
I first figured it out one day when I slipped a nickel in my back pocket- rather than bothering to put it in my purse at the time. By the end of the day that entire section of butt around the nickel hurt like the dickens. A throbbing painful pain.
The same sort of pain my head gets with the clips in my hair.
Don't know why, but I don't want any of you wise crackers offering me reasons why my butt and head can both hurt! HA!
So what can you do about it? Back shortly with my response to that question.

Sorry I don't have any official support for this, just having lived with it for several decades and out of desperation tried to find a solution when no one had answers.
In my opinion.... you need to reduce the swelling. 2 cups of dandelion tea a day for a few days will help do that (it is a diuretic). Dandelion tea- a box of bags- can be ordered thru Amazon for less than $10. (Roots and/or leaves of the plant are ok.)
Drink it early in the day or you may have to move your bed into the bathroom at night. Unless of course you like running to the bathroom and back several times a night more than normal.
I make my tea (hot) using 1/2 caffeine free green tea and 1/2 dandelion (which can be "root- like" in taste and smell).
My face, like your gums, gets swollen, tender and aches too. Glasses resting on my nose hurts. Not being a wimp, but it can be right painful not to mention annoying.
I also take Sudafed daily, 12 hour kind, two times a day, with nothing else in it. It is known to reduce swelling in the sinuses and in my opinion, the whole face/head. Without it I am worse than miserable and have a constant headache.
The other solution that helps me, when herxing and this symptom happens or worsens, is to stop the meds and allow the toxins to clear out.
The GOOD news is, it will go away. Mine gets worse in "spells", when herxing, or if relapsing.

Bonnie, I had those scalp pains exactly as you described, basically during lyme.
I think it is one more spot with inflammation.
Probably due to bad circulation there, or cold, a bit like people get chilblains at the extremities (fingers, toes, nose tip, ears).
I had that on and off during lyme, for sure, specially at certain spots. It had nothing to do with encephalitis, in my case.
Not that I know!!
After lyme was gone, I got that again on and off, less frequently. I do think it is a sort of inflammatory reaction to toxins and bad circulation, as the pain is so similar to chilblain pains.
I think there may be infections involved too...
In the last years, the pain disappeared though.
When I'm herxing with candida, it can come back. That is why I think this is just an inflammatory reaction to excess of toxins in the body.
I hope it is not encephalitis!

Is your scalp burning? Does it hurt to wear a hat or blow dry your hair?

I don't use hair dryer because of noise. And vibration sears through spinal cord.
Freaks me out. Hope it goes away with treatment. Have had it for awhile. No consistent pattern though.
