Interesting- tested a little low on iodine, though the amino acid test showed tyrosine is high.

Since my basal temp is also on the low side, and tyrosine + iodine makes the thyroid hormones (increase metabolism and body temp), doc put me on 1 iodoral per day.

After 2 weeks or so, he wants me to repeat the daily basal temp (10 days?) test and see if things improve.

Someone please jump in if anything I stated is inaccurate.

I'll let you know how the new basal temp test looks.

Maybe in some folks armour thyroid might not be necessary to correct thyroid issues- lets see how my "experiment" goes.

Just found this online:

(from http://altmedangel.com/iodine.htm)

"How to Self-Test for an Iodine Deficiency

1. Dip a cotton ball into USP Tincture of Iodine. (You can get iodine at the drugstore for under $1.)

2. Paint a 2 inch circle of iodine on your soft skin, like the inner part of your thigh or upper arm.

3. Wait. -- If the yellowish stain disappears in less than an hour; it means your body is lacking crucial iodine and has soaked it up. If the stain remains for more than four hours, you iodine levels are fine.

Why check your iodine levels?

Low iodine levels can zap your energy and make you feel tired, edgy and worn out. Low iodine levels can even prevent you from getting a good night's sleep. Before you go to your doctor with complaints of tossing and turning all night, aches and pains, and just feeling "blah," you may want to perform this self-test.

Because the symptoms of an iodine deficiency are classically identical to so many other illnesses (like depression, stress, chronic fatigue, or fibromyalgia,) many doctors either misdiagnose it or miss it completely and tell you there is nothing wrong.

Why are iodine levels so important?

Low levels of iodine mean your thyroid isn't functioning properly. The thyroid helps balance hormones, regulate heartbeats, stabilize cholesterol, maintain weight control, encourage muscle growth, keep menstrual cycles regular, provide energy, and even helps you keep a positive mental attitude.

Women are naturally prone to iodine deficiencies. That's because the thyroid gland in women is twice as large as in men -- so under normal circumstances, women need more iodine. However, when women are under stress, the need for iodine can double or triple. Yet the foods we eat contain less and less dietary iodine. For example, back in 1940, the typical American diet contained about 800 micrograms of iodine. By 1995, that amount plunged to just 135 micrograms. That's an 83% decline.

Two thirds of the body's iodine is found in the thyroid gland. One of the best ways to boost your iodine levels is to add seaweed sea vegetables to your diet. Just one teaspoon of sea vegetables a day can help you regain normal iodine levels. Incorporating seafood and fish into your diet can also help. Other foods that contain iodine are eggs and dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt, onions, radishes, and watercress. Some foods, called goitrogens, should be omitted for awhile as they hinder iodine utilization. These included kale, cabbage, peanuts, soy flour, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi and turnips.

To reactivate the thyroid gland, tyrosine, iodine, zinc, copper and selenium are needed so make sure that foods containing these nutrients are included in your diet."

I was extremely deficient in iodine. My doctor checks people's iodine levels all the time. He said most Americans have some deficiency, but might was basically nonexistent.

I was taking 2 iodoral a day for a while. I cut back to one a day because I got acne on my chin that wouldn't go away, and that's a sign of too much iodine. Although according to my doctor, it was a sign that the iodine was working and pushing out toxins.

But I got tired of the zits. [Smile]

Aniek,

Your doc was right. That's not a sign of too much iodine. That's a sign of detoxing bromine and flouride.

Most use 1/4th tsp Celtic Salt in water to flush crap out.

Any other iodine users with experience?

AT one time I was taking 4 Iodoral tablets a day. I later cut back to two tablets a day.

I think it's good stuff! So far, no problems with my thyroid.

Lymetoo,

What did you have to do for detoxing bromide and flouride?

One of the world experts on this I saw suggested celtic sea salt for detoxing the bromide/fluoride.

That's good.

Some people have a rough time detoxing bromide.

But those people don't have Lyme... so detoxing some bromide for us Lymies is surely a walk in the park. lol

Are you all talking about an iodine urine spot test or the 24 hr urine loading test where you take 50 mcg or Iodoral and see what % is excreted over 24 hrs?

Thanks for the info!

I was taking iodine & kelp alternatively & I got these big pimples on my chin, neck area...

Who would have thought? I thought my hormones were out of whack... I took some female hormone herbs for about a month & my dowsing said I didn't need it any more.

I'm 48 so it was very weird to be getting acne. I felt like I was going through puberty again - LOL

I'm going to try the Celtic salt. Maybe I was detoxing fluoride & bromide?

I had some fillings replaced from silver/mercury to composite but the stupid dentist put in these fluoride impregnated shields in the cavities without asking... She thought she was being helpful - I guess.

I really didn't want any fluoride in my mouth - Oh well... I also swim in a pool with chlorine. What can you do? I am going to try the sea salt along with the iodine.

It seems to be helping. My AM basal temp is higher then it used to be.

PS - There is a kind of controversy about regular salt or Kosher salt vs. sea salt. One doctor I read was saying that the sea salt has too many trace minerals if you take it in large doses - like with the salt/c protocol...

You can overload on the trace minerals. They are supposed to be "trace". They said that Kosher salt was actually better...

Just thought I'd mention it.

1/4 or 1/2 tsp probably isn't a big thing - Just if you get into the larger doses...
