Hi,
Does anything help ease the "chemical burn" of doxy? I just found out that my friend who has been traveling was not told by his dr. to stay out of the sun and now he's in some real trouble.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Yikes! That sounds painful. I have treated severe sun burn before but not due to doxy (friend fell asleep!). I bought the Aloe Vera plant, cut off a stem/leave whatever you want to call it. But in the fridge to cool it... then cut it open and squeeze out the gel... apply to the skin. Apply a few times a day. It's slimy and smell like green onion but it works great! If there is no breakage in the skin, apply coconut oil all over the body to moisturize and avoid peeling. Good luck!

Ohhhh this is so awful. I feel bad for your friend.

I have not found anything that fixes it, but the few things that have helped us are putting some witch hazel on a cotton ball and swabbing the area and then using Benadryl Gel.

I have also tried aloe and it seemed to make it worse.

The Benadryl gel has helped us the most.

Also keep any exposed burned areas covered.

Since it's like an internal chemical burn, I don't think anything will actually fix it except time.

I'm so sorry for your friend. Doxy burn is so miserable.

A bath in tepid water which has been treated with baking soda may take out the sting.

For localized areas,it may help to have any MD provide a script for "Silvadene" cream which is an antibacterial used for burn victims.

My doc prescribed it after a terrible rash(on doxy) on my left elbow, resulting from "driver's side window down elbow"-- You can even get a pretty good burn just through your front windshield.

Even though windshields are treated,so some eyewear that "auto-darken" may not work inside the car, you'd be surprised at what UV does pass through the glass....

I used the liquid bentonite clay from sonnies on my doxy burned hands and it really helped. Suggested by my chiropractor.

Your friend could try using "Solarcaine Cool Aloe Burn Relief" spray. It has aloe to help heal and sooth and lidocaine to help relieve the pain. It really works.

I'm super fair and burn easily. I can't tell you how many times I've had burns with blisters. Not fun.

I accidentally poured boiling water on my hand where the skin is thin. It was severe and (though they don't recommend direct application of ice but I did that too). I constantly alternated ice cold water (ice cubes in water) and Aloe Vera gel until the pain went away. Result is that when the pain went away, the burn went away and I have no scar at all from it though it was red for a while.

Aloe vera, best if you can buy a plant. In some warmer places, like Florida, they sell large leaves in the produce dept at the grocery. I don't think the bottled up stuff does much.

Drink lots of water. It's dehydrating.

Call the doctor. Burns can be bad.

I found that Solarcaine takes away the sting, though I think aloe is more healing. Maybe some vitamin C.

that doctor should be held accountable!!!

i agree, aloe vera or even calamin lotion. helps me.

i fell asleep on a beach in northern germany once. i burned so bad i wasn't red, i was dark purple. i couldn't lay on my stomach at all. it was my back and back of legs. luckily i went to the military hospital and they treated me.

if it's that bad, go to the emergency room. the skin can get dehydrated. he really need professional help.

Ouch...

Yes, REAL aloe gel is excellent which is why I have 2 plants outside my lanai.

Cool Aloe I.C.E Burn Releif gel with

Lidocaine

should help somewhat.

He/she needs to drink some good water to restore the fluid and electrolytes.

Voss Water(get the "Still" kind) is best, IMO.

A lot of "nicer" grocery stores carry it too.

Note that after you cut the leaf the remainder of the leaf is only good for a short while. I would go buy a couple of aloe plants and just know you are going to use a lot of leaves. Do not go stingy on the leaves!

Carrington Labs did studies on the leafs and said the healing molecules lasted about 5 hours or maybe a little longer. Freezing may help the leaves to last a little longer but they will lose potency and I would not use cut off leaves more than a day.

Lily of the Desert is a good gel brand. The Gel will need to be applied very often 6 ot 8 times a day, once or twice will not stimulate enough healing if the burn is real bad. The gel can actually take heat out of the burn.

Also getting aloe juice and drinking it to hydrate will help but the application of the gel on the skin is the primary step.

Note the off brand aloe gels are not harvested correctly and the gel is just that without the aloe healing benefit. So if you see cheaper gel in a bigger tube yes it has aloe but it is of little to no benefit. According to Carrington the gel (beneficial molecules) must be removed from the leaf within 5 hours of cutting it off the plant.

This is the process that Lily of the Desert uses.

Not a herbalist, just an avid aloe user. [Smile]

All the Best, MattH

We always used plain vinegar on sunburns. Very soothing and cooling! If you put it on right away, it will lessen the severity of the burn ... bigtime.

Hope it works for a doxy burn too!!

--PS - can be applied over and over
