The price for Xifaxin is insane. $489 for a month (550mg x 2 daily) with insurance.
Has anyone found a cheaper source?
If find it really helps for Bart in the gut (or whatever bad bacteria is causing my IBS).
Has anyone successfully treated their IBS with this or do you need to stay on a maintenance dose?
My theory is that the lyme is causing a motility problem and the bacteria gets trapped in the small intestine causing a buildup of bad bacteria there. This is why you need to keep using it, because motility disorder is the underlying problem.
Any thoughts on price and whether this is effective treatment?

That stuff is what made my yeast intractable. Two weeks of that cleaned out every bit of GOOD bacteria I ever THOUGHT I had.
I am still angry with my GI dr for giving me this drug!!! He THOUGHT I had SIBO ... wrong again, ignorant doc who doesn't believe in candida/yeast.
My ins paid for it.. no trouble at all.
try costco maybe if you still want to do it after reading my experience!
PS .. your "IBS" is probably yeast .. mine was, and now it's worse than ever

I don't think it's yeast because it cured my diarrhea last time I took it and made my stools normal, but as soon as I stopped the diarrhea came back.
I have taken diflucan and it did not change the diarrhea or gas problem.

I had a great response to Xifaxan, but I had good responses to flagyl and cipro as well. Any ABs made me mostly better but Xifaxan was actually a miracle for me. That was for Crohns and was before I knew I had Lyme. I think it was probably Lyme all along.
It was $1100 a month when I took it!! The doc had to appeal to BC/BS for a waiver so i could take it. It was approved. Took it for 2 years or so.

While I took it, yes, it solved all my gut problems, but didn't do anything for joint aches that went along with my Crohns. Gut symptoms would come back after about 2 weeks anytime I tried to get off it.
I liked it because it was only mildly systemic due to its large molecular size, it doesn't go through the intestinal wall easily compared to other ABs so I didn't have any side effects. Cipro and Flagyl helped my gut but gave me thrush and yeast issues. Luckily I didn't have the gut yeast issues with Xifaxan like Lymetoo did.
What really solved it though was LDN and treating my Lyme with doxy. No Crohns symptoms since last April or May. This is why I believe what I actually had was Lyme, but no way to really know I guess. I have been able to take breaks from LDN for several weeks and not had any flares of the CD.
I was also diagnosed with IBS as well as Crohns, no symptoms of either now, thankfully!

Thanks for the thoughts on LDN Countrymouse. Every time I try to get off Xifaxin the gas and diarrhea come back and I have been considering LDN, since all of my other lyme symptoms are now gone after many years of treating with various combinations.
