Since I recently had a big problem with doxy I thought I would share this info in case you are new to doxy in the chance you may see this and understand.

People with hiatal hernias need to tell their dr of their condition and proceed with caution. If you have a hernia even taking the medication with lots of water and not lying down may not be enough.....

this first site is CONTINUTALLY UPDATED !!

From FDA reports: Doxycycline and Hiatus hernia

http://www.gihealth.com/html/education/esophagitis.html

Lots of medical info here if that is your sorta thing:

I still say the main issue is not taking it in the middle of a full meal.

How are you today?

Yes, it should be taken in the middle of a full, substantial meal. That makes a huge difference. And keeping your torso upright for a full hour afterward.

Still comes back to how you answered your own question by posting: "People with hiatal hernias need to tell their dr of their condition. . . ."

And it depends upon the status of your esophagus. Just switching to it in the middle of a meal can make all the difference. When you make that change you may be fine.

I have a hiatal hernia. It is a very, very common condition.

But, I successfully took doxy when I took it in the middle of a meal, as per my lyme doctor's instructions.

When I took doxy on an empty stomach, it gave me indigestion, reflux, etc.

So, I don't think the hiatal hernia is the key here. Rather, it is the way the doxy is taken.

Me too...like tf

I took it the right way, drank TONS of water. From what I have read , 99.9% of the cases where it causes any problem with esophageal ulcers is from people that take it WITHOUT ANY water and at night before bed (or while lying down.)

I ate small amounts of food sometimes, but never with full meal.

I went to the dr today- my regular GP- she is a very nice good dr. She has helped me with a lot and is the one that didn't agree with my fibro diagnosis, suspected lyme, and actually seems like she really cares.

She told me I never should have been on doxy because of my GI history .

I believe she may have a valid point, not because I don't know any better, but because my other sort of LLDO also told me to stop immediately , AND because I have now read tons of personal accounts of why most people get this reaction.

If I keep taking doxy without first being evaluated by a GI then I would consider myself stupid. So that won't happen. Not until I know more.

The damage is done and now I can barely eat anything, so I am going to let it heal for a bit and see what happens.

as a future reference to help people here I think it would be great if anyone mentioning NOT to take it on an empty stomach to tell them why. I was told by several people to take with food, but to me it didnt make sense since it said to take without- and without a reason why I didn't think it mattered.

I had no strength at that time to reference the internet on my own. So, I did what I thought was the best and it wasn't.

According to published facts like this below, there is a risk..... does it say they took it with food or without? no. with that variable the hypothesis that all is well when you take doxy with food would be indeterminable, according to this webpage....

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10407565

which states:
"CONCLUSIONS: 40% of patients receiving doxycycline or indomethacin developed MIEI; 10% developed ulcers. Hiatus hernia increased the risk for MIEI."

TF and Ipkayak, did you ever have GERD before?

DGL, slippery elm bark, marshmallow root - these things may help your esophagus heal more quickly.

Seems to me they should change the patient info!!

Posted by LisaK (Member # 41384) on :

thanks Razzle

Lymetoo- you mean to include variables? agreed.

I cannot find anywhere anything that tells me WHYYYYYYYYY people with Hiatal hernia should tell their drs! I am going to ask a pharmacist

Since I had polyps too that makes me worry. but I will see I guess. I just hope I didn't ruin myself!

Topic: trouble swallowing pill

you posted on posted 27 August, 2013 that you " took my pill this morning (doxy) . . . :"

MANY posts here caution what can happen if doxy comes in direct contact with the esophagus. Many explain why food must be included. Most specifically, the "WHY" was posted for you right here:

TF: 28 August posted " . . . if you take doxy on an empty stomach, it won't be long before you suffer--reflux, heatburn, etc. and you will not be able to continue the med. . . . " (end quote but there is more good detail at this thread.)

well why does it say to take without food?

another lyme paradox

I could barely read back then. Nothing I can do about it now.

And I still am not convinced it wouldn't have happened any way. I am extremely sensitive. Several drug allergies. and numerous drugs I am sensitive to. this is most discouraging.

thanks for helping everyone. One day I hope I can straiten this all out!

No, I mean they should tell people to take it with FOOD!!

You should call the manufacturer and tell them about your adverse event. They will document it.

that is a good idea Lymetoo!!! I will check into that.

Even when I told my dr a couple weeks ago that it was happening he said nothing.

I have been telling drs for yrs that I have trouble swallowing. They all just say "drink more water"

I have been thinking....I was drinking an awful amount of LEMON JUICE while on the doxy too. I think this was way too much acid for ME.

Whats miei.

I have had reflux for yrs. I blame it on ibuprofen

Mt hiatal hrnia is getting bigger

I dont take doxy that much any more but it is giving me more trouble

Posted by LisaK (Member # 41384) on :

I read on several sites that you should never take ibuprofen OR acetaminophen while on doxy

Quote: [you just remembered that you were] "drinking an awful amount of LEMON JUICE while on the" doxycycline. (end quote)

Good thing you remembered that.

Well, that could explain a lot. I cannot tolerate ANY citrus, at all. If you were taking "an awful amount of lemon juice" thinking it is good for the liver, there are MUCH better options (and they won't destroy tooth enamel or eat the stomach away).

An "awful amount of LEMON JUICE" is never good for anyone. Especially someone with Hiatal Hernia or any other irritation of GI tissue, citrus is off limits, too. Avoiding that should help.

Also of help: slippery elm bark; marshmallow root; DGL. You can often find these in combination supplements. Start at www.vitacost.com or www.iherb.com and search: DGL.

LIVER & KIDNEY SUPPORT & and several HERXHEIMER support links, too.

I can't tolerate any citrus either. Wish I could.

Keebler, like I said I forgot I had a hernia! O my! I was havnig NO symptoms for years and I totally forgot- plus even if I remembered I am not sure at all if I would have questioned using doxy or eating lemons..... :/

a few people here on this site told me to do the lemon thing to flush my system while treating.

No I am paying....burn baby burn

I must say though, that the shooting pain in my back started almost immediately with the doxy but I had no idea what it was- thought it was a lyme symptom!

I think this whole bugger got the best of me for sure, or at least a big chunk of my best, haha

That's what happens when your brain isn't working right.

I am now off of doxy for the third day. I feel better in many ways, but I have symptoms of infections for sure. woozy, "on acid", staring, and a lot of joint pain that make me feel like I am gonna throw up if I think about it.

I also have an increase in my neuro stabs n jabs- what I call them. little pricks all over me like little devils with forks!

I also still have the processing issues of mind to hands/feet, etc. and tinnitus seems worse

I don't seem to have as much fatigue as I have been having over the last 6-8 weeks either, but one thing I learned - who knows where or what will pop up or why..... I need to read more! I need 36 hours in a day

My husband wants me to keep on doxy 'cause he is worried if I stop. what to do.....
