My mom keeps testing border line for lupus. She has been falling lately and has broken two bones. She says her legs are week and her arms. She is 78 so maybe that's a contributing factor. However she has always been young for her age.
I just wonder if lupus is actually some kind of infection. A couple of years ago she took doxy and felt better while on it. I want her to go see my LLMD but not sure she is open to that.
She also has fatigue and flu like symptoms. She told me she sleeps so easily anytime of the day. Also her platlets are low, a symptom of lupus.
Right now she is in the hospital recovering from surgery due to a broken bone.

- IMO, ANY - yes, ANY, "autoimmune" diagnosis should be examined for any connection to lyme, other TBD or connected stealth infections.
So many "autoimmune" disorders are just an umbrella, or a waste basket, a collection of symptoms.
Still, with lupus, it could be both lyme/TBD and autoimmune factors.
LDN - Low Dose Naltrexone might be considered.
I was misdiagnosed as having lupus (and so many other things). They were wrong. Various tick-borne and a few related stealth infections were at the heart of it.
I am so sorry to hear that your mother is in hospital right now, and required surgery.
Likely, she was given some steroids to help reduce inflammation after surgery (and that can make lyme worse). And, likely, she has been given lots of acetaminophen which is very hard on the liver and all cells due to how it totally blocks glutathione in the body.
If the hospital she is in has any naturopathic doctors or acupuncturists on staff, they may be able to offer some pain relief that won't stress liver and kidneys.
I don't know what else to tell you and just have to stop now. I hope she / you find what you need to help improve the situation. -

- Right now, I'd be more concerned with her nutrition. It's usually horrible in any medical facility. Hopefully, the one she is in "got the memo" but in case not, be mindful of:
- Magnesium deficiency can cause bones to break more easily. And, if she happens to be deficient, they can give her IV magnesium in hospital. That can help relieve pain and also nourish the liver.
For nutrients, you might see if you can take her some greens powders and hemp protein powder. Add some cocoa and stevia.
Hope she has a sense of humor and can "fly under the radar" to get some things that most hospitals just don't do.
If fact, many of her symptoms could be related to lack of magnesium.

Hopefully she is going home tomorrow. Or possibly to rehab. At home she eats pretty healthy.

I think there is a huge connection between auto-immune and infection.
Also consider Candida/yeast as a cause of the auto-immune. It can be very sneaky. She could have it and not know it.

The Roadback foundation uses low dose antibiotics to cure Rheumatic diseases...so they feel there is an infection involved.
Yes I have read about the road back. It makes total sense. I was just speaking to my mom about that. Trying to ease her into considering that it could be infection as the root cause.
Oddly enough the surgeon said her bones were hard. I guess 2 breaks within 1 year was just bad luck on her part.

I had been misdiagnosed with lupus for years from a top leading university hospital. My labs and all symptoms pointed to lupus. Fatigue was terrible.
Two years into Lyme treatment, I am no longer ANA positive and don't have fatigue or joint pain. In other words, I never had lupus, but Lyme all along.
Feeling better on antibiotics tells you something. I would feel that way also and the docs would brush it off. Now I know why.
