I'm heterozygous for MTHFR - wondering if it's a good idea for me to take activated charcoal? I had bad reactions to cholestyramine and glutathione so am wary now.

Found conflicting opinions on this and would love to hear from those with MTHFR who tried it.

Also, anyone have any recommended brands?

I am heterozygous for A1298c and I have had no problems with charcoal. Why is it bad for MTHFR?

I'm very chemical sensitive and do fine with Takesumi activated charcoal, recommended 2 tiny scoops/day with fatty meals.

Charcoal is actually recommended for binders on the Amy Yasko site. She is the one that specializes in the methylation genes.

Also, I agree with Robin, Takesumi Charcoal is one of the best!

If you have a problem with sulfur (CBS up regulation) then you could have an issue with the sulfur in charcoal.

I have sulfur issues, but at times still take charcoal (like if I feel like I ate something that was causing food poisoning) and I handle it well.

Remember, it depletes minerals, so be sure to supplement.

Sulfur in charcoal is an issue if the charcoal is derived from coconut hull. The Takesumi Charcoal IIRC is from Bamboo, and I don't think it gets sulfited...

Thanks so much everyone! I just ordered the Takesumi after the unanimous recommendations. I am sensitive to sulfur - likely why I had issues with glutathione - so it's great to know that I can take this. I will take it slow and see how it goes.
