How to Search on Lymenet

To start, you click on the search link, which is at the upper right side of the page.

But don't click on it now, we're going to stay on this page to do it! I'll reproduce the Search page here, and take it piece by piece.

It looks complicated with it all broken up here, interspersed with all my words - but it's really not.

First, a simple search: let's look for something about "picc protectors" - those things that you put on your arm to let you shower when you have an IV line.

Type the words arm shower in the first box on the page.
And you only want posts with both words, so leave the first button checked:
Search Words:

leave this button checked-->

Match all search terms above.
Match any of the search terms above.

Next, you tell it where to look. We're going to look in Medical, but it would also work to look in "All Open Forums":
Search Forum/Archive:

We want to look for the words in the messages (the posts), not the titles, so we leave the next box at "Entire Message":
Search In:

We don't care when the post was made, so we leave the next box at "Any Date":
Search By Date:

We don't care who made the post, so we leave the next box blank:

Search by User Name:
Don't check this button! -->

Search For Exact Name (case sensitive)
Partial Name Match Acceptable

Okay, that's it!
Now all we have to do is hit the "Perform Search" button.
Go ahead, try it! (but be patient waiting for a response)

What you'll get is a page full of topics, with a name listed for each topic. Your searched-for text is in a post by that person in that topic.

Dan, I've found that I had trouble with the search when I had my preferences showing higher than just two days.

I don't know if that makes any sense, but, usually if I've got more than two pages showing up on posted topics, then I was not able to get to any of those. Like some may have their preferences set at 10 days, and for me when I did that it (the search) would not give me anything if it was in those 10 days.

I thought that may be because it wasn't searching for stuff we already have up, but, for the search was only checking through the ones we don't.

Am I making any sense? Not sure, but, let me know, please, about this. I don't have any trouble, now, that I set my prefences to only showing two days posts.

Thx, Rosemary

Rosemary, I understand what you said - but that doesn't appear to have any effect on what gets searched. Mine is set for "30 days", and the search results include stuff from within that period.

Wow, this is great! Thanks a bunch, danq.

Even without the excuse of Lyme-brain, I have hated the search feature here at LymeNet because I didn't understand well enough how to select the options pertaining to the search words, nor the "search in" feature either (about selecting the message text vs the topic headings).

Now I feel a bit more confident and much less frustrated. Thanks, danq.
