I've taken acyclovir and Valcyte and they both gave me herx like reactions. I have not been on valacyclovir (Valtrex), but acyclovir is the active ingredient in Valtrex.
You can read about people's antiviral treatment programs here: http://hhv6foundation.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=antiviral You will need to sign in to read the posts. I've posted my oxymatrine, valcyte and to some extent my acyclovir journey.
Good luck, Best, Timaca

I've been taking valtrex for several years since lyme treatment seemed to stir up the viruses.
Unfortunately I was so sick the first few years of treatment that I can't tell what part valtrex might have played in that.
The few times I've been off for a short time I seem to develop viral like symptoms. Can't be sure of that though without a longer break from the meds.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hey Tree-hugger,
I was on acyclovir a little while for an outbreak of Shingles. I do remember feeling just awful after starting it.
So, even though this may be a 'normal' reaction... You most likely should let the prescribing doc know how you are feeling.
I hope you get through this quickly and feel better soon!

I took Valtrex for CFS long before my lyme diagnosis. I had no reaction at all, and no improvement either.
I would be curious to know if it helps with high viral titers.

nspiker~ Valcyte did drop my antibody titers to HHV-6 and EBV. Oxymatrine did drop my antibody titers to Coxsackie B. And I have felt better.
Treepatrol~ I'm wondering if you have high antibody titers to any viruses....
