I was looking for natural substances that boost the immune response through toll-like-receptors (TLRs), and I accidentally ran into AHCC.

It seems that it may be able boost NK cells by about 250% on average on cancer patients.

Has anyone tried this?

From Wikipedia:
In Japan, AHCC is the 2nd most popular complementary and alternative medicine used by cancer patients. Agaricus blazei supplements are the most popular, outpacing AHCC use by a factor of 7:1.

I'll have to look into Agaricus blazei next.

These are the ingredients in this link you posted.

AHCC Proprietary Blend (Mushroom Mycelia Extract, Candelilla Wax, Cyclodextrin, Microcrystalline Cellulose) 1000 mg

Other Ingredients: Silica, Gelatin, Glycerin.

I did some research on AHCC just now... first time I had heard of AHCC... I have been researching the production of NK cells due to my son's drop in WBC and ANC.

My son has been taking AgariGold and it has been helping him. I guess these supplements are similar. An excerpt from:
http://www.agarigold.com/en/discover_03.html
quote:
AgariGold contains H1X1, a highly potent Agaricus Blazei mushroom, which has the highest levels of beta glucans and essential nutrients of any Agaricus Blazei mushroom and possibly of all medicinal mushrooms.
Here are some other links I was reading. You might find them interesting if you have not already found them yourself.

http://www.raysahelian.com/mushroom.html

http://www.tondamoney.com/bencandy.php?fid=82&id=1122

As with all supplements potency, origin of ingredients and many other things contribute to how effective a supplement is. Before investing, check what other people are saying about the brand you choose. If it works, it doesn't matter how much it costs. And Waiora's version is working for my son...

I hope you find what works for you!

Vitacost sells AHCC.

Pure Prescriptions sells it at a better price, especially when purchased in higher amounts.

AHCC from what I understand is a patented product imported from Japan. I don't know if this is actually true, but there's a possibility that all AHCC comes from the same place and is all the same, regardless of who packaged and sold it, or perhaps mixed it with other compounds. Some brands may add this or that and employ creative and impressive marketing, but the active ingredient might be the same among all of them.

It's hard to tell if it's working over the short term without having before and after bloodwork measuring the level of NK cell activity.

When I was being treated for CFS, the doc sold me an AHCC product, it was mixed with vitamin C and was called Macro Force or something like that. He recommended it highly and it was expensive. Now I just take the stuff by Pure Prescriptions and take the vitamin C separately.

It's recommended to take a loading dose for 3 weeks, then switch to a maintenance dose.

There's another mushroom product that's supposed to be better but I forgot what it's called. I'll have to look into it.

fyi - http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/69113.cfm

Some people feel that any product made from a mushroom diminishes the immune system.

http://ingridnaiman.com/subscription_lists/mold_emails/fungi.html

I always got a bad cold at the end of October. I thought it was because of the cold - but now I'm thinking it's the leaf mold (from dying leaves) effecting my immune system.

I guess you have to read up & see if a mushroom product will really be of use to you.

Here it is

Biobran MGN-3
http://www.biobran.org/comparisons/immune-assist.html

You may want to look into apolactoferrin for immune system support, too.

I did a google search and I found the price of this Biobran MGN-3 is $350-$400 for 6 bottles of 50 pills... recommended dosage is 4 pills a day... at that dosage you would need to reorder every 75 days.

Why is this particular mushroom supplement cost so much -- not sure if I mentioned this... but the waiora supplements my son is having success with are quite expensive too.

Anyone having success with a Agaricus blazei based product that is more reasonable in cost?

Dr. B, the Long Island guru who wrote the guidelines and doesn't practice anymore recommended a product called Reishi-Max by Pharmanex. It's an AHCC product that claims to be more effective than others because it uses "cracked spore" technology for maximum delivery of effective ingredients.

And YO-Y'ALL it is expensive.

I'm often skeptical and feel that this cracked spore thing is very likely just a fancy marketing ploy designed to make people think that this product is better than all of the rest and worth the exorbitant price.
