The government dietary guidelines and the food pyramid have resulted in huge increases in diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity over the past 40 years. They were based on flawed science, politics, and who had the best lobby to influence the USDA.

Here's an article from the scientific journal "Nutrition" (Vol. 26,issue 10) describing the flawed science and assumptions. "In the face of contradictory evidence: Report of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee"

The current state of obesity in America is not based on people eating a plant based diet.

The current state of obesity in America is based on a high-carb, low fat diet which is what is prescribed by the current USDA food pyramid.

I just noticed that this article in the Miami Herald was written by someone from the PCRM. The PCRM is the medical front for PETA, so the article is obviously biased. It is not news, it is OPINION.

The article is not only biased, but misleading and confusing.

It states that:
>Conclusive scientific evidence supports a low-fat, plant-based diet for optimal health. Conclusive?? No. I can list a bunch of peer-reviewed scientific studies supporting the opposite.

>The article implies that the USDA caters to the meat and dairy industries. [confused] Look at the food pyramids recommended over the last 40 years. Grains (bread, cereal, etc.) are the largest block. Vegetables and fruits are the next largest. Then meat/protein and dairy next, with fat being the smallest block. Looks to me like the USDA is favoring the wheat/corn/soybean industries.

I've said before that I have nothing against vegetarianism. It works for some. It doesn't work for everyone and I don't like it when a group like PETA tries to push it as the only way to be healthy.

And as for the food pyramid - what do they feed cattle and pigs to fatten them up? Grains.
