Line placed Mon.

My arm is still pretty sore, and hurts if I try to bend it beyond say a 90% angle. It's very itchy too.
But I can't really itch it because it hurts too much to touch any where around the PICC area.

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance to anyone who may reply tonight.

Arm soreness and itchiness is normal but if your pain is severe thats different. My dd had one placed on Wed and she does not have any pain and is using her arm a lot. I think you should maybe call the hospital tomorrow just to be sure. We did a couple of days ago when we had an infection question. They were used to questions from newbie picc line patients and were very helpful.
Hope it gets better soon.

Thanks rose.

The pain isn't severe, just still bad enough to want to avoid the movement. I have an appt with my Dr. on Mon., however, maybe I will call 2morrow just to inquire about what is appropriate and about the duration.

I am glad your DD has done so well. It seems like kids bounce back pretty quick from some things. My son had a big shoulder surgery and we never heard a peep out of him!

I've had a nurse here everyday until today and she's checked it and measured my arm everyday and said it is fine.

However, it still helps hearing from those who have a PICC in or those who've had one in the past, since they have first hand experiences and may have felt the same things.

Thanks so much for you help. I really appreciate it.

Hi,
If your PICC was placed Monday, I would expect the pain to be minimal by now. Were you lifting above 5 or 10 lbs, driving, vaccuming etc? These activities can cause soreness and irritation.

You may be getting phlebitis, irritation of the vein, even just from normal activity. If it is swollen the concern could be a clot.

You can try a warm, wet compress every 4 hours at the insertion site. Just place saran wrap or something else waterproof so the dsg does not get wet. If you can take Motrin, Aleve, etc this can help reduce inflamation. I have seen really good results using this. Try to take the Motrin or Aleve as directed on package for 24 hours.

And rest your arm, sounds like you have been doing this. Some dsg cause itching more then others, if you have a Tegraderm on, there are other dsgs you can try, like an IV3000, or Primpore. Hope this helps you!

Grace
