Is there still a significant risk of getting a yeast infection on antibiotics if someone is taking the proper amounts and the proper kinds of probiotics, and is eating a healthy diet?

Has anyone here gotten a yeast infection from antibiotics while they were taking the proper probiotics and were following a healthy diet?

I'm just wondering if the risk is minimal when we're taking the correct precautions.

Yep....it is possible.

I did fine while on large dose Amox and Azith. for 7 months. Once my LLMD switched me to Ceftin/Azith, that's when the trouble started. Ceftin must be waaaaay powerful.

I got gut issues and a mild case of yeast pretty quickly. Had to stop ABX while I straightened this out-- took about 3 weeks.

Upped my probiotics to double what I was taking before. More Kefir and more yogurt too.

Ceftin packs a whallop.

The risk is not minimal. If you are on high dose combinations of antibiotics, you have a good chance of getting yeast, even though you are doing everything right.

These meds kill off all your gut flora. You are continually trying to restore it throughout every day. That is the battle that is going on.

Some meds cause yeast much more frequently than others.

I got yeast a number of times during my lyme treatment. But, I would get rid of it within a week each time I got it because I was doing everything right. Doc gave me diflucan each time it happened.

Some docs give the patient diflucan to take along with treatment. Some give diflucan to take as needed. All this shows you that it is going to happen. It is just a matter of time.

You could go for a year with no problem. Then, you get yeast and after that you are always battling it. That's how it was for me.

i havent had any yeast problems yet, and ive been treating for a year and 3 months.

my doctor has had me on nystatin or diflucan from day one though..

i have talked to people who dont start having yeat problems until 3 years into treatment... their doctors didnt have them on any anti-yeast meds though...

i can only speak from my experience and say that so far, i have been able to avoid yeast.

I've been taking high-strength probiotics for 12 years, but they have not been enough to ensure that I don't get yeast/candida infections, regardless of whether or not I am taking antibiotics.

It might be worth getting a variety of antifungals [eg uva ursi, grapefruit seed extract, oil of oregano, plant tannins, Thorne's SF722 or pau d'arco and taking a 2 week round of one of them every so often, rotating which you use. Some of these are inexpensive.

Alternatively, you could ask for Nystatin [not the liquid form as it contains sugar, at least in UK it does] as a preventative.

I had a yeast problem before I even started abx. I did get rid of it fairly quickly though by taking probiotics, diflucan and following the diet. And I did this while taking the abx.

My doc still gave me another script for the diflucan but I'm not currently taking it. I do have it on hand though if I need it.

It's not just an issue of abx killing off the good bacteria. It's an issue of terrain.

Anyone with chronic Lyme is going to have terrain problems that allow fungi, yeast, and parasites to thrive.

So if you're hoping to avoid yeast by taking your supp's, forget it. The best you can hope for is to keep it under control and not allow it to become systemic.

Thanks a ton, everyone, for the info!

What are the first signs of a yeast infection, so that someone can know that they're starting to have a problem?

Thanks! [Smile]

When you first wake up, look at your tongue. This must be before you eat or drink anything, before brushing teeth, etc.

If you see a white coating or white or yellow patches, then you have some yeast in your mouth.

You must attack it then because if you don't, with every swallow it will go into your stomach and spread throughout your gut. Yeast generally starts in the mouth.

Read the end of Burrascano Guidelines where he tells you how to clear it from your mouth. Once you scrub it as he says (can use peroxide), you open a probiotic capsule and sprinkle the contents on your tongue and let it dissolve there. That will restore the normal balance of flora to the tongue and mouth.

If you don't do that, the yeast will be the first to grow back after your scrubbing and you will have to start all over again.

You can Google "thrush" or "yeast in mouth" and add the word "photos" and you will see pictures of what it looks like on the tongue.

It is often accompanied by bloating once it is in the gut.

HUGE RISK and absolutely possible .. perhaps PROBABLE would be a better word!!

ABX clear out the good bacteria.. PERIOD. We are continually playing "catch up" when on abx.

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

If you guys don't mind, I have two more questions, and they both involve the process of opening a cap of probiotics into the mouth.

1) Are any of the PRE-biotics (which are included in the probiotics supplements) bad for the teeth, in which case we wouldn't want to dissolve those kinds in the mouth and let them stay there overnight?

2) Is it good to open a saccharomyces boullardii cap into the mouth in the same fashion? Is there any chance that the "good" yeast can become overgrown on the tongue?

P.S, I consider myself a big dork for knowing the name of the beneficial yeast strain, but I'd be an even bigger dork if I happened to have spelled it correctly! lol

Thanks again. [Smile]

The first sign of a yeast infection for me is the doc handing me a prescription for an antibiotic! Doesn't matter what kind, by the time I leave the office with the script, I have a yeast infection...

Everyone talks about a white-coated tongue... but I have a question. I'm too afraid to look this up over the net, so please break it to me gently! [Smile]

What does it mean if there is a black coating on the very back of the tongue? (the middle and front of the tongue look clean).

The black would be a fungus.

your questions above:

1. I don't know. Maybe call Theralac.

2. I don't know. Doesn't sound like a good idea.
