I take 4000 iu's a day and my level hovers around or below 30. My PCP thinks 4000 iu's is already too much to take, but I can't get it above 30. I just started researching this to see if I can take more or if there is something else I can do to get my levels up.

Mom2kids - you should be concerned about a D level in the 30's. Especially the risk of breast cancer.
If you are low in D, you are low in Magnesium, and vice versa.
Daily UV exposure, 20 minutes, unprotected, will bring your levels up.
Mercola discusses at length here, as well as the types of testing and dosage.

Several of the anti aging doctors recommend 10,000 to 20,000 when the D level is below 40. (I do not know this is ture I am relaying what they say).
Mine got down to 28 last spring. I then went from 2000 in April to 4000 till early Sept. My blood test in early Sept. was in the low 30's.
I went to 7000 twice a day for a total of 14000. It is now in the low 50's as of the second week in December. So for me it was about 3 months to get back above 50 and I take the same amount today.
Two of the interviews I listened to were Dr Hotze from Houston and Dr Mercola. Both were being interviewed on the radio or pod cast. I have not seen it in writing. So far I have not experienced any side effects that I can attribute to the additional vitamin D. I did hear one of the Hotze clinic doctors say that when they find some one with a really low vitamin D they will put them on as much at 40,000 per day.
All the Best,
MattH

Thanks Julie, I actually just read this and I saw Dr. Mercola on Dr. Oz the other day talking about this also. I do go in the sun for a little each day, but I've had Stage 1 Melanoma 2x in last 4 years, so I am a little leary of too much sun.

My D test is below 30 .Even last Summer when outside a lot more. BUT my Hydroxy D is a couple points above normal.
been told you have to really watch out for the second tier test .... So I'm confused and Dr pushed it off as Marshall thing..
It was a totally different Dr, who was main DR to astronauts at NASA that warned me.
So now I don't know if high or low, I see heart Dr. tomorrow, first time, maybe I'll ask for test again since I've been inside over 90% off time since Aug.16th
Other doctor's say load up to 10,000 units a day.
Also when my bones really hurt I down the stuff for a couple of days.
Just told LLMD these weren't as big of issue Thursday and guess what's back.... Sore throat, pain in knees and large right thigh muscle. feverish and sweats all day, now chills,
This just bites.....

My level was 17. Doc put me on 5000 iu twice a day, then after a month 5000 iu once a day which is where I am now. I don't know what my level is now but they wanted it over 50. I noticed that I don't get the joint pains as bad anymore.

Mine was an 11, my doc initially put me on 5,000 every day for two weeks if i remember correctly, then dropped it down to 2,000. I havent re-tested yet, it's expensive....it's on my to-do list.
