I have had discomfort in the upper right part of my neck for 4 years! It started around my ear. my inner ear felt sore. I couldnt even wear my earrings becuz it hurt to put something into my lobe.

This went on for a few years. I had MRI's. Xrays and NOTHING showed up. finally i went to a dentist and he said my bite was uneven. My teeth, when clenched, didnt meet up evenly.

I have a strong bite on the right side and my teeth dont touch too much on the left side so he told me all that strong bite on the right side made all my neck muscles and jaw muscles tight and knotted over time

He gave me a mouth splint. i wore it 24/7 for about a year and my ear is feeling so much better. I can now wear earrings without any discomfort.

However I HAVE KNOTS all in the back of my neck still and down my shoulder on my right side. the knots must have just spread stright from my neck all down my right back and into my shoulder blade area

but theyre DEEP! my boyfriend kinda digs his
elbow into my shoulder blade area and finds TONS OF BIG KNOTS that feel like ropes. I tried deep tissue massage for three months and they couldnt even reach the knots. theyre too deep.

I tried cupping . that didnt work. i tried a trigger point injection and that did [email protected] am noW trying acupuncture three times a week. This is my first week. so far havent noticed ANYTHING

i am desperate and I am annoyed. I cant take it anymore. Theres GOT to be a way to get rid of these damn knots! Do you think the acupuncture will work? someone help me before I go insane with this!

If it were me, I would try taking lots and lots of magnesium to see if that did the trick. It is a quick and easy test.

Usually, if it is mag deficiency, you will notice improvement in a few days.

This is the most common reason for a lyme patient to have muscle knots.

Here is what Burrascano says:

"Magnesium deficiency is very often present and quite severe. Hyperreflexia, muscle twitches, myocardial irritability, poor stamina and recurrent tight muscle spasms are clues to this deficiency.

Magnesium is predominantly an intracellular ion, so blood level testing is of little value.

Oral preparations are acceptable for maintenance, but those with severe deficiencies need additional, parenteral dosing: 1 gram IV or IM at least once a week until neuromuscular irritability has cleared. (page 6)

(required)
Magnesium supplementation is very helpful for the tremors, twitches, cramps, muscle soreness, heart skips and weakness. It may also help in energy level and cognition.

The best source is magnesium L-lactate dehydrate (Mag-tab SR, sold by Niche Pharmaceuticals: 1-800-677-0355, and available at Wal-Mart).

DO NOT rely on cal-mag, calcium plus magnesium combination tablets, as they are not well absorbed. Take at least one tablet twice daily.

Higher doses increase the benefit and should be tried, but may cause diarrhea. In some cases, intramuscular or intravenous doses may be necessary." (page 28)

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

I've seen it work over and over in all the years I have been on this board. Some have had total tight muscles for a very long time. It was mag deficiency the entire time.

Spread the doses of mag out throughout the day. Otherwise, you can get diarrhea.

I really hope this helps you. So sorry you have had to suffer this.

Please post and tell us if it worked!

Sounds miserable, and like you've tried a lot of things already.

What about physical therapy? I had something different than you, but did have TMJ, face, neck and shoulder pain and headaches. They kept coming back, even after massage.

The physical therapy helped me a lot, maybe give it a try.

Like TF said, try magnesium.....but I'd try it in the form of Magnesium Chloride spray. Put it right on the spots and rub in.

Also, may lymphatic massage.

Hope you get relief soon.

In addition to magnesium, LED light therapy would help.

Physical therapy departments would have this, as do some chiropractors.
Or you could buy a unit.

Did you have your splint adjusted as your bite was corrected? Initially, you are supposed to have it adjusted every 2wks. As your jaw is stabilized you can go longer in-between adjustments.

If you have not had your splint adjusted in awhile, your bite may not be right yet. You may want to see a TMJ specialist for a proper evaluation and fitting of your splint.

I'm going through this process now so I'm not just making this stuff up.

Correcting this may ultimately relieve you of your pain. Good luck [Smile]

So sorry to hear this. You said you tried 'a' trigger point injection. Just one? Or did they do a full series? And then ask you to come back in a week? I too was covered in knots, and had 7 or more shots each time I had the injections done.

I also finally gave in and did IV Magnesium chloride, supplemented by weekly IM (that I do myself). Both are easy and relatively inexpensive.

If your mag is low to the point you get knots, oral mag is not going to fix the cause of the knots - you really need the IV, as well as repeated series of trigger point injections until they are completely gone.

Additionally, frequent rebounding might help you work out some of the knots, and it will keep you flexible.

I wish I had known about the trampoline 2 yrs before it was recommended to me - it got rid of my frozen shoulder and mystery arm pain I'd had for 2 yrs.

I know this sucks - muscle spazms do not go away on their own. They just get worse without the right intervention. I hope you find yours.

I have the exact same thing. I have knots all the way down my left side of my neck, down my shoulder . They hurt SO badly. I always wake up with a VERY sore neck and I am constantly taking pain pills to try to ease the discomfort.

I do find that the massage therapist can make it better for a while but not long. I feel your pain that is for sure

Where can I get IV magnesium. Do I get it through my LLMD. I dont see her until the end of next month I dont want to have to wait that long

I tried physical therapy TWICE. I had two full treatment plans. It did NOTHING

my knots are stubborn. very tight and deep

I am only a week into my acupuncture. The acupunturist told me ill need 15 sessions to start seeing significant improvement. ive only had 3 so far. do you think acupuncture will work? theyre doing ALOT of needling in and around the knots. I HOPE it works.

You get IV mag at a lyme doctor's office.

Go get Mag-tab SR at Walmart, etc. until you can get the IV. Take a lot of it throughout the day.

If the problem is mag deficiency, only magnesium will solve the problem.

This has been discussed on LymeNet a lot, even recently. You will see many cases of it.

Before I spent all the money on acupunture, I would do the mag experiment.

Well, 1000 mg of a very absorbable mag would be good. The question is, is your form of magnesium absorbable. The cheap mag is usually not.

If you took 1000 mg of magnesium by taking Mag-Tab SR, that would be about 11 tablets per day, that would be a lot. Have you tried that? I would try it for a number of days to see if it makes any difference.

In addition to taking lots of magnesium and doing acupuncture on myself, I enjoy epson salts baths....as hot as I can stand with at least 2 cups of salts.

Sometimes I add baking soda. And I use a nice skin softening bath gel with it.
It does seem to help relieve some of the spasms.

When it was very bad in my back, I had trigger point injections. The most successful of those was Botox...worked like a charm. But it was too expensive and not covered by insurance.

When I could no longer afford acupuncture I bought some needles and did it myself. I'm not that good at it, but I am better than nothing and can often effect significant relief.

Be careful to use alcohol wipes if you do it. Start with just the basic arm, leg, hand, foot points and be sure to do both sides.

You can also just apply finger/elbow pressure to the points. Have your boyfriend put his elbow on the point and push hard for 7 seconds. Then lightly finger massage and move an inch away and do the same, covering the whole area.

It can be a painful procedure, but it does feel great when it is over! I think this is called myotherapy. I used to go regularly for it when I was rich!

I use Salon Pas on them as well as Lidocaine pads, too. Tiger Balm is good, but keep it away from eyes.

I so understand your frustration and misery!!!

I'm going to be honest. I dont think these knots are because of lyme and magnesium deficiency

I only have these knots on the side that my bite is off on. and the pain started in my right ear and spread down all the muscles into my right back of my neck and down my right side of my back and shoulder.

My bite splint made my ear feel better. but now the muscles at the back of my neck are soooooo stubborn and theres deep deep knots in there. you have to push really hard to find them

TF is correct, she was right on with recommending the Mag for my horrible muscle spasms. I now use the Mag SR 2tabs twice a day, and have felt so great!

My dentist fixed my off-bite problem with a high tech process. Cost me about $700 but was worth it.

^ what was the high tech process?

my bite is stabilized now from the splint but the knots that have been there for years from it are still there. only my neck is bothering me. the whole area around my ear and jaw is fine now. but the tension and knots all spread to my neck too. this has been going on for years. going on 5 years
