I'm on the combo Ceftin, Plaquenil, & Zith right now & have been taking Magnesium Glycinate along w/ it.
I used to take the combo of Ceftin, Flagyl, & Zith along w/ Magnesium Glycinate.
Now, I'm going to be switching to Ceftin, Doxy, & Biaxin combo & the new Doc I'm seeing said you MUST NOT mix Magnesium w/ Doxy, or the Doxy won't work at all.
Now, I'm wondering if it's ONLY Doxy that I shouldn't mix w/ Magnesium, or if I shouldn't have been mixing it w/ ANY of these ABX?
Do any of you guys know which ABX you're NOT supposed to mix w/ Magnesium?
Thank you.

You can't take magnesium close to Levaquin either. And it isn't just magnesium, it is all minerals:
"Also, it is important not to take minerals like calcium, zinc, iron, and magnesium within several hours of the dose of Levaquin, because these minerals will bind Levaquin and render it less effective. "
You really have to check the package insert that comes with each med, being on the look-out for this stuff.
If you see instructions about minerals, circle it and/or highlight it. No sense wasting time and money taking meds that are just cancelled out by drinking milk, taking vitamins with iron, and taking magnesium tablets at the same time.

Ok, phew! Glad I didn't cancel-out the last year of taking my ABX's by using Mag, too!
That's good advice to carefully check the ABX instructions regarding minerals & milk! I had gotten lazy about doing that, because after awhile you're taking so many pills, that you just get sick of it!
Thank you, TF!

Jennifer, I am NOT saying that I know anything about the meds you are taking. I am saying that you have to check the package inserts to see what the restrictions are.
I just know for a fact that Levaquin is another med that has mineral restrictions. There could be many, many more meds with these restrictions. I don't know. So, the patient has to look into it. That is what I am saying.

I will go check out the teeny-tiny printed info sheets from Target Pharmacy I have laying around from my Ceftin, Flagyl, Plaquenil, & Zith prescriptions.
Thanks again, TF.

you shouldn't take Zith and mag at the same time. You need to take them a few hours apart.

I am currently taking Mag SR and my LLMD has told me to continue taking it along with all the different abx I've been on even Doxy.

So, a person should be taking the mag at the same time they take the probiotics. Because you have to wait 2 hrs to take the probiotics after/before you take the ABX, too.
Gawd, this is so ridiculous!!!!
Maybe I'll just quit taking mag. Then, I won't have to worry about it interfering.

Both my Doxycycline & Azithromyacin scripts came with warnings to not take *with* mag (it's ok to take mag, but just make sure it's a couple hours away from abx).

a good basic rule is to simply take all vitamins/minerals/probiotics 2 hours apart from your antibiotics; it may mean you have to create an intricate daily chart to follow when you are starting out with a heavy dose of ABX, but it can be done.
My other basic rule was to always take a probiotic at bedtime so it could work overnight, undisturbed by anything else, while I was sleeping ~ also a good time for a partial dose of calcium/magnesium to help you sleep.
