I started oral glutathione yesterday at a low starter dose and I feel awful today. I have a headache that won't go away (Advil doesn't do anything), and my stomach is off too.

Other than stop taking the glut, is there anything I can do to feel better? I especially want this awful headache to go away.

The irony is that I was feeling pretty good before this.
thanks!

Do you have an allergy to sulfa? If so, it can affect you.

I had an IV push once. My doctor knows I am allergic to sulfa, so I was given an antihistamine before the push.

I got a horrid headache and then very intense itching. My doctor was not 100% sure it was from a sulfa allergy. He thought it could have been a detox reaction.

You should let your doctor know.

Sulfa drug allergy has nothing to do with a detox reaction from glutathione. These are two completely different substances.

Glutathione triggers detoxification, which can cause symptoms from the mobilization of toxins. Binders, baths, sauna, lots of water - these will help. Vitamin C and B Complex, minerals also should help.

I think sulfa goes with the methyl cycle. That's a different detox pathway.

Some of us can't handle glutathione. I am one of them. I did the detoxigenomic liver test through the Genova Diagnostic lab in NC and test results showed a genetic inability to process it. It's a test you could take to find out if you can or cannot handle it.

Robin

But you probably do fine with NAC, right?

Sulfa is not the same as sulfur or sulfites or sulfates. Sulfa is a class of drugs based on sulfonamides, a type of antibiotic. The inability to tolerate this class of drug due to allergy has nothing to do with methylation. There are many people who have an allergy to sulfa drugs who do not have methylation issues.

Ugh, that was an awful night! Eventually the headache I'd had all day turned into a migraine - the worst one I've ever had. Advil did absolutely nothing. That was good advice to call my LLMD so I called them hoping they could call in a prescription for something stronger but unfortunately I didn't get a call back until the morning.

The headache was unbearable and I also had vision changes and nausea. Eventually I vomited, which helped the nausea and the headache relented just enough that I could finally fall asleep.

So, now I'm wondering what it all means. Clearly, I won't be going back on Glutathione anytime soon. Wondering why I had that reaction, and if there is anything else I should avoid? This is the second bad reaction I've had in the past few weeks (also had a reaction to Mepron, and had to go off of it - this was after being fine on it for 3-4 months).

Thanks so much to those who posted last night. I pretty desperate when I couldn't reach my doctor and my hubby even suggested going to the ER, and it was comforting to know that I could rely on help from Lymenet.

What kind of glutathione? Liposomal?

How much did you take?

Glutathione most likely fired up your immune system and went after pathogens , which is a good thing . However , it feels like all of the old herx symptoms for a while. It may be a good sign, but feels bad for a while .

I have a sulfa allergy and cannot tolerate Glut.

My LLMD (very well known LLMD) told me some people with sulfa allergies will cross react with certain substances that are sulfur and sulfite derivaties/based

I also cannot take NAC or Chlorella or I will get a typical sulfa like reaction; rash, itching, headache, facial flushing and tingling in lips.

Also regarding Mepron. One of the main inactive ingrendiant is Saccarhin. This is suppose to avoided by people with sulfa allergy because it is a sulfa based artifical sweetner. My understanding is that if you are sensitive to sulfa, over time Saccarhin could become a problem.

I took a half tsp of Researched Nutritionals Tri-Fortify Orange Liposomal Glutathione.

I think my reaction was WAY too strong to be a herx. I've never had a herx that was anything close to that before. And even if it was a herx, I wouldn't take it again - I was taking glut to see if it made me feel better, and instead it made me about 100 times worse.

So how do I know if I have a sulfa allergy? Is there a test for that? I didn't have hives or itching or anything like that. Can a horrible headache and vomiting be an allergic reaction?

1/2 tsp can be a lot.

I was told to start 1/4 an I started at 1/8

Any idea if it's ok to go back on my regular meds, which are just Mino and Diflucan right now? I was at the end of an "off" week (pulsing) when the Glut reaction happened, and I was supposed to go back on yesterday but held off to give my body time to get over it.

I feel fine today - a slight headache off and on (responds to Advil) but I actually had that even before the Glut.

I tried to ask my LLMD but he is out of the office and unreachable.

I just went through something similar WP.

I have had those awful headaches...I call inflamed brain....every since I came down with lyme in 2001...not dx until 2003.

I had migraines for years before but had a med that helped.

That med doesn't help with these. Excedrin extra strength some how helps.

I need to take it every 3 or 4 hours while going through it.

I know what you mean about being very leary of taking something that might cause that symptom again.

I knew what I was taking had a weird smell to it.

Sulfa might be what I am smelling. I do't know. I just know i don't like it.

I also wasn't sure about starting back on my normal meds after going through 9 days of the inflamed brain.

I can't say glut caused mine. I am still not sure what caused it.

I did go back on my regular meds and am doing OK now....I don't function much at all and am bedridden for the most part most days.

I have had another symptom pop up that comes and goes since starting the glut.

I hadn't put two and two together until I read this thread.

So, I will continue to keep it down to one or two drops.

I did hear from my lyme doc but she did not think the glut was the problem.

She thought it might be the teasel root.

Someone else said they herxed on the similax.

I tried all 3 at once.

So, takign it slow with one at a time.

It is tricky trying to figure out what is causing what.

I have been concerned about taking mino as I have heard it causes bad herxes.

So good to hear you are OK with hit.

I started back with just focusing on trying to get food in me as I was not able to eat or take meds/supps when the pain in the brain was so bad.

Then, I went back on meds/supps

getting up now to take the glut...one drop. [Smile]

But you probably do fine with NAC, right?

I don't recall doing NAC so I don't know. All I know is I tested genetically compromised for the glutathione and methylation pathways, two key detox pathways. I am not able to handle any glutathione supplements.

I usually ask my alternative doc about what I'm going to try since he knows the chemistry of all supplements related to those two pathways.

That test, once again, is the detoxigenomic liver test through Genova Diagnostic lab in NC. They test for 8 pathways in Phase 1 liver detox and 4 main pathways in Phase 2.

I am allergic to sulfa drugs but have no problem taking the 'Essential Pro Liposomal Glutathione' softgels (sold through my LLMD)- he refused to give me the IV though as he felt the IV's contained a 'small molecule' of sulfa and didn't want to risk it.

WP-your wicked headache may not be a true 'allergy' but obviously you are sensitive to *something* in the liquid one you take. Heck I can't even tolerate many dyes in pills.. you're wise to stay away from it until you see your doc, check into the glut softgels, or other precursors to glutathione. Take care!!
