Hi everyone..I have been experiencing loose stools, accompanied by severe nausea and cramping, for the past 2 weeks. A stool sample taken just 10 days ago shows no traces of c diff and this does not feel like the c diff I had last year.

I am gluten free, vegan and eating very few foods at the moment. I am mainly living on green drinks, some fruit, rice, potatoes and chickpeas-and tiny bites of these foods at that.

I am also back on TPN for several hrs a day. What can I do to ease this bowel stuff? It makes me feel so sick and run down.

Thanks. Jess

Can you handle pureed pumpkin?

How 'bout flaxseed meal or oat bran powder?

And what about coconut flour (makes wonderful sauces and gravies, from what I understand)?

I know these things may be difficult with the slow stomach, but if you can eat even one bite of any of them, it may help with the loose stools.

If you are gluten-free because of all the pressure here, ignore this pressure and eat gluten foods if that is what works for you.

If the above won't work, might try some charcoal tablets to help slow things down. This would also serve to help bind up toxins and help cut down on the herxing.

Are you taking magnesium? If so it can cause loose stools. What does your doctor advise?

Welchol or CSM can slow that down. Sorry you are struggling! Do you have gastroparesis as well?

You might also try adding a banana to your diet, one that is still slightly greenish on the ends and not turning brown yet. These are notorious for helping to bind up stools. Just don't eat too many in one day or you may end up constipated and uncomfortable!

PS: Jess, I'm so glad to hear that you are eating and tolerating some foods! Hang in there, this is exactly what your body needs to help get stronger and to help fight off the infections. So you can be well again [Smile] I just feel that it is possible for you, that it is going to happen Jess!

Jess, when I had my severe flair of Ulcerative Colitis-- someone here mentioned florastor and culturelle. I started with two florastor a day and one culturelle. it really worked better than any other probiotic I tried. after I was better I continued with one florastor a day and an occaissional culterelle or other probiotic.

also I would try the BRAT diet along with your TPN for a few days til you feel better (BRAT-banana, rice, apple sauce and toast, but anything bland and low fiber) use rice toast if you must, but weren't you doing well on plain old white bread?

plain white rice overcooked is great. I think green drinks, and chickpeas may be too harsh right now, even potatoes. keep it really bland and dry. With GI issues... the opposite of what we normally think of as healthy is the way to go.
low fiber, high carbs, no raw anything, fruits and veggies cooked with no skin.

glad you don't have c-diff.

I found that psyllium husk powder (1heaped teaspoon per day in my case, at night, away from meds) with plenty of water (very important, as it swells ) helped to break a horrible cycle of symptoms like yours.

Although I still have somach issues, this really helps me to get somesortof regularity.

SuperCritical Omega 7 by New Chapter.

Take 2 about 20 minutes before you eat your 2 biggest meals of the day. At the end of the week, you should be able to cut to 1 before the meals.

I SWEAR by this stuff. It rebuilds the lining of the GI tract. You will see a difference in a matter of a day or 2.

Vitacost sells the large 60 count bottles cheapest: http://www.vitacost.com/new-chapter-supercritical-omega-7-60-softgels

I haven't tried their own brand of sea buckthorne oil, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper.

I so hope this helps!!

FYI everyone, you can still have c-diff with a negative test!

Jess, if you continue to have loose stools it's time to talk to your doc about treating for possible c-diff. Treatment is flagyl or vanco. There might be another treatment, but I forget.

There are some foods I cannot eat without having loose stools.
Raw tomatoes and cucumbers cause increased peristalsis and everything goes right through me in a few hours.

I found that canned peas are fine, in fact they are high in protein.
You can also buy pea protein, and some brands get enthusiastic reviews.
