Need some help with artemisinin. My doctor recommended this to me but wasn't very specific about how or when to take it. She told me to start very slow, because it can cause severe herxing reactions. I haven't started it yet because frankly I'm scared.

It's the artemisinin made by Allergy Research Group and comes in 100 mg capsules.

I'm on cefdinir 300 mg twice a day, along with azithromycin 500 mg once a day for about a month and a half now. I have had a few herxheimer reactions since then, my worst was this past weekend. It was...awful. The only thing that didn't make it worse than awful was that I didn't have to go to the hospital. I'd like to avoid the hospital - as I'm on long term antibiotics - and don't want to worry about things like MRSA or CDF.

The last couple of days I've felt almost completely normal. I've even been able to carry out normal activities for a change. It's hard to want to start treating the babesia more aggressively...though I have to get started with it soon.

I've opened one of the pills and divided the powder into four parts, approximately 25 mg each. I'm trying to start out with the lowest dose possible, then scale my way up.

I'm an herbalist and acupuncturist so I know this herb - qing hao - which is very good for parasites - particularly malaria. But it's also very strong and shouldn't be used for long periods of time. I'm very worried about taking it, especially a concentrated version of it such as artemisinin.

I know that I need to commit to this - commit to recovering from babesia - and I want to, but I want to know the lowest dose I can start on.

When should i take it? With food? With my antibiotics? Or away?

What's the lowest dose any of you have used before you experienced a herx?

I also have a sauna, dry brush, glutathione, parsley tincture, etc. to keep up with my liver detox. These do assist with herxes but when I'm feeling awful it is so hard to get the energy to do these things...

Any advice would be appreciated.

Stephen Buhner says not to take artemisinin for longer than 1 month.

You might ask your herbalist for the dosage.

My husband is pulsing the artemisinin. He takes it on Fri, Sat, and Sun. 1 cap with breakfast and 1 with dinner.

That seems to be working for him. He does herx - Sunday and Monday are usually not such good days.

I feel like i can deal with the herxing in general, just not the difficulty breathing. Does anybody experience that when herxing?
