I had some onion last night and today I feel a bit herxy or something. I have more muscle pain weakness, and my hands feet hurt. Can onion cause a herx?
Is this a herx or would it be from sulfur? I know I have the cbs defect so I am not sure which it is...

For me no, but I have read that others do herx with onions.

Onions caused me inflammation even before Lyme. Some foods can do that.
I was told at one time to avoid pitta-aggravating foods (onions being one of them) and my inflammation went down when I did that.
I don't know if it's stimulating a herx for you or not.

Onions can cause alot of issues for folks regardless of lyme. You are probably sensitive to them and this is your body letting you know.

How/why would you herx from onions? Is it an antibacterial? It does contain high amounts of sulphur and can be an issue for sensitive individuals.

If you have the C677 gene mutation (especially if you have two copies) you can have sensitivity to foods with a high sulphur content, such as onions.
Quest offers testing for this genetic mutation and it is often covered by insurance.

The CBS mutation will cause sensitivity to sulfur if the mutation is activated... I have a double CBS mutation and cannot eat onions without reacting to the sulfur.
Taking molybdenum may help calm down the reaction.

I have one copy of the C677 mutation that I graciously passed along to one of my children. I am a very generous parent :/
I think if someone has two copies of this mutation the reaction to sulfur-rich foods could be severe. Razzle, thx for letting everyone know that molybdenum could help calm down a reaction.
As for me, I love, love, love onions and garlic (also very high in sulfur) and have been cooking for more than 25 years with both of them.
When I first found out that I had one copy of the C677 mutation and I had passed it along to one of my children, I panicked and started to cook without onions and garlic.
I soon realized that the way I'd been cooking for her her entire life wasn't the problem. The problem was that she still had a persistent, chronic infection (Lyme).
My advice would be to check out your genetics. Via Quest, you can see if you have the C677 genetic mutation, one or two copies.
If you have two copies, you are considered homogenous and therefore more likely to have a reaction to foods high in sulfur. And like Razzle said, you might benefit from molybdenum.

I remember reading that. Makes me feel like I'm doing something right by cooking with onions and putting them into salads raw.
Growing up I was told that onions and garlic were very good for you.

Onions give me flashing lights/migraine auras due to the high sulphur. I did not know Onions kill yeast.....I second the/Molybendum (so) for helping w/ yeast die off.
My llmd put me on a sulphur detox tincture. Made from asparagus extract.

onion attac biofilms i.m.o. as well as they cause problems with histamine release and they contain sulfur important if there is a CBS mutation.

Thanks you guys for the responses. It is hard to tell if it is sulfur reaction or herxing.
I never had sulfur reactions (despite being homozygous for cbs) before I got lyme so it makes me think herx. Anyway, I am planning on starting Yucca root soon for the cbs defect and probably steer clear of onions even though I do love them,
