I was always impacted by my musky smelling basement. When I first started getting Lyme symptoms & when I started antibiotics I noticed that when I spent a few minutes in the basement, that I would feel worst & more tired.

Then after a leak & large visible mold signs it was over. I could not stand to be in the house for even a few min. Within minutes I felt greater head & neck pressures, nose & throat burning, lungs burning, & utter exhaustion beyond base level fatigue. When I left the house the symptoms melted away & when I went back in they started up again. Each time I went back & forth it was harder to recoup.

Has anyone else experienced clear & cut mold sensitivity signs such as I have?

Yes. I can tell immediately upon entering a building if it has mold. I can smell it. It's overwhelming. And it makes me very tired very quickly.

Do you also get the neck tightness & brain fog increase really quickly within seconds to short few minutes?

It happens to me & probably because I already see the my blood is loaded with spirochetes & more toxins in the blood stream prevent O2 delivery even further. So the effect is relatively immediate.

I guess I could have lyme and mold toxins?

I had a leak under the door in my old bedroom. Also water was coming in through the brick into the bathroom.

I ripped out my shower and there was mold behind the dry wall.

Could this have made me sick gradually?

Yes, exposure to mold often precedes coming down with lyme disease. It did in my case. The mold suppresses or damages your immune system. Then, you easily succumb to lyme disease.

I lived in a rented house that had a mold problem. For the 3 years I lived there, I was always at the ENT. The final visit was for black mold growing in my ear. That ENT told me to report the house to the Health Dept.

Then, I moved to a new house that backed to a woods and got lyme disease.

See these notes I took on the subject at a lyme conference a few years ago:

Also, a few years ago I was tested for allergies and was told that I was very allergic to mold. No allergy to anything else.

I can smell mold in a room and it will make me sick to stay in that room. I was told to never rake leaves and stay away from leaves as leaf mold will also set off my mold allergy. I have to take Clarinex in the fall to overcome the mold in the outdoor environment. Plus I have to rinse out my nose daily that time of year (with a saline solution and squirt bottle my doctor recommends.)

It definitely made me sicker & contributed to Lyme going out of control.

I passed the bacteria to my wife, although she remains relatively asymptomatic. Her joints started popping after the leak & mold & she had become more tired overall after we moved. I decided to check her blood again & I could see more spirochetes & for the first time I saw much longer spirochetes in her.

It appears that the mold suppressed her immune system as well & blossomed the spirochetes much quicker.

Mold is everywhere & the secret is not to stay around where the concentrations are higher for long or at all. If the levels are high enough, but still low, below the threshold where they can make your nose, throat, & lungs burn, then it is difficult to tell certain Lyme symptoms apart from Mold symptoms.

I could not tell my added exhaustion & aggravated Lyme symptoms were due to Mold. The exhaustion put me in position where I needed to be in bed more often & more likely throughout the day.

Are you guys aware of survivingmold.com ?
This mold lyme connection has been backed by science for 2-3 yrs now. There is a protocol...testing....the first part is cheap and easy. You finish each step in order. Test and meet criteria before next step. Many get better before last step
Any with lyme sx have those sx go away with the mold tx

I have followed this doc for years and read his books and never felt he could help me.

I had a five yr experience with mold in work building 15 yrs ago. Very specifuc sx when ever heat or cooling was on. I saw a pulmonary specialist and was on ten meds at times but did not stop sx til i left buiding

No big exposure or sx for 15 yrs until last march when i vacationed in moldy house

I ended up on ten meds again but worse. I didnt respond...was in bed for a month

This got me referred to environmental dic trained by doc who has the above site. She is a primary who was llmd for 7 yrs before getting trained to tx mold illness

I know...for some reason...ppl here do not seem to like or respect or accept this doc and his protocol. I know he is rude and has an awful bedside manner and has made some mistakes in his seach to help those with bio toxins recover

The second lyme doc i had...one of the biggies and the one that kept me working for 20 yrs so i could support my family had an awful bedside manner too. I dealt with it. These docs put up with a lot and it doesnt surprise me they gey cranky and some times it leaks out to patients

I have known you guys for years. Please help me understnd why the lyme conmunity is shying away from this doc and a treatment that seems to be working ?

Pm me if something shouldnt be said on the board. I just really need to understand why there isnt more excitement about this potential "cure" -my word... please talk to me about this. I respect all of you and if there is simething i dont know i need to be informed. Ty.

I found out about the mold connection from this site when I first got ill & started traveling down the chronic lane. TF even told me about a story of a lady who did not get better, until she left her moldy house...thanks TF!!!!

So at the time I paid attention to how I felt in my musky basement & I still went & spent time there anyway. At the beginning I did not feel any difference, only that the smell was starting to get irritating. Then once on ABX & when Lyme still got a better hold, although still at a phase where I questioned Lyme, I noticed I started to feel worst overall & just slightly more tired than normal.

Three plus years into sickness I could not take the basement at all & started to wear a gas mask. After the leak & physical appearance of mold all hell broke loose. I did not see the leak at first, but I experienced these added symptoms:

-I was just getting even more exhausted & aggravated Lyme symptoms, more pain & disturbances.

-After a few days my lungs started to burn.

-Then my nose.

-Last my throat & then I got sensitive to warm/hot drinks.

-Then as soon as I stepped into house within seconds my head & neck would tighten with some circulatory issues & immediate brain fog (more than usual).

-Then if I stayed more extreme exhaustion & aggravated Lyme symptoms.

Also, from my work with microscopy I am able to see the Borrelia spirochetes & other coccoids in my blood.

I have checked my blood from the beginning of going chronically sick & what I see is a direct correlation between the amount of bacteria in my blood (especially Borrelia), my level of Lyme sickness/symptoms, & the following:

-Food & chemical sensitivity

-Mold & fungi sensitivity

-Inability to detox & feeling toxic

-Worst chronic fatigue

-Exercise intolerance

-Worst & around the clock shortness of breath, especially when moving too fast or too much, which is way below normal level.

-[Overall] Lyme symptoms, disturbances, & pain.

So in other words when I could not find anything significant in my blood I only had a few symptoms that I could not honestly identify as Lyme.

When I started to see the bacteria in my blood I experienced growing Lyme symptoms, that I can more conclusively identify as Lyme.

When I saw an explosive amount of bacteria growth in my blood, the list of symptoms took foothold (the ones I wrote above).

AND all this adds up & makes sense when one considers the microscopic observations. An increased level of pathogenic bacteria in the blood (& other organs & tissues based upon pain) depletes more resources from the body & dumps more toxins as well, whereby making it more difficult for the body to cope with daily toxic & biological exposures. This can in turn lead to a myriad of health issues including but not limited to INCREASED chance of organ damage, stroke, heart issues, & cancer.

PS, I am gonna post this in my microscopy thread as well.

No I haven't noticed neck tightness. Perhaps an increase in brain fog, but it's hard to tell because what I notice most is overwhelming fatigue. And I can't think when I'm that exhausted!

We also found the ERMI test to be very helpful in measuring latent mold levels in our own house.

I can tell instantly if there is a moldy smell. I can only spend up to about 2 minutes in my own basement before I start to feel ill. Hard to explain but I feel unwell if I stay down too long.

I just got blood work done through labcorp to test for mold. I may have someone come to test the house, I believe they do air sampling.

I'm concerned because one member of my household has had worsening asthma symptoms, another has sinus issues that resolve when out of the house. Allergy testing was negative, so the doctor could not explain the nasal and eye issues.

For me, I'm having issues feeling better, so looking into mold is my priority now.

What types of testing have people done? The mold plates you buy and send in don't seem too reliable, since all environments have mold how would you know what is the problem?

Is having someone come in and take measurements worth several hundred?

I tried to get advice from a well known doctor that treats mold/ environmental illness but they wanted me to pay $275 for a "phone consult."

My fatigue always accompanied the mold, but it was different all depending on the level of mold spores present. For someone who did not know about mold & who was oblivious to this, it would be hard for them to decipher the true cause of the fatigue.

I was looking into the different types of tests as well, but then I thought about it some. When I washed my clothes & closed the door of the washer, the next day it would smell in there, since it was located in the basement.

During the leak the mold grew & it grows anywhere & everywhere there is water/humidity, nutrients, & proper temp. So if the area smells musky & it is humid often, then you can betcha there is mold there. Then it really becomes a matter of how many spores per cubic foot that can set you off & cause aggravated & noticeable symptoms.

Do this for a sure way to grow mold & see if the spores are in your house. Take a large plastic & see through bag & open it up fully. Run around the room that you are testing with it fully open, catching wind (like a parachute). The spores will get trapped in the bag, if there any in the room. Then you get a disposable container, something like a 1 gallon milk container that you cut the top off. You get yourself a piece of 6" x 1' wood or cut piece of sheetrock, you can get the latter for free at your local Home Depot as they give scrap pieces away.

Place water in the container & the wood or sheetrock partially submerged in the container & all of this in the bag. Tie the bag with some air in it & you will see mold take hold in about 1 to 2 weeks. You will see black mold from the spores grow up the item.

When it comes time to dispose, open the bag outside & you can get a sample to send to the lab. Home Depot also sells mold test petri dishes that you can place in your home, or you can scrape some off the DIY test kit that I just explained. If you had a microscope, you can check the black mold spores as well.

I had cut out the sheetrock that had the mold & threw it away, but it was late in the game, because I discovered the slow leak late. I then called ServePro, one of the best mold re-mediators around, but they said there was no mold to be seen. But yea I know the spores were there, because after the leak I could not take the air anymore anywhere in the house.

We had a regular mold inspector come in and find some things. It is great if you can find someone who will inspect your entire house, including the roof, where pipes used to vent air can allow for leakage of rain between the roof and the pipe. Most inspectors will miss some things, so just understand with everything you do, it's a start and they'll find some of the problem.

Having a mold detecting dog come into our home after we did a bunch of remediation was a great help to find some parts that were missed. This was much cheaper than the regular inspectors, by the way, and would probably be where we would start, if we had to do it all over again.

http://mold-dog.com/

We continue to finish working on the last problems that were found, but plan to continue to follow up periodically with the mold dog and with ERMI testing in a few key rooms.

If you think the whole house is loaded, that points more toward trying to start with a brand new place, if possible. For us, we couldn't find a way to make that practical, so instead did lots and lots of work to clean up where we are. Unfortunately, this is just very expensive work.

I had a urine test for mold at RealTime Labs. Also, expensive. We did this only after expensive mold remediation and symptoms were not improving as the docs were expecting. If you know you've got a mold problem, seems like generally would be a waste of money to do an expensive test for it.

I was going through a huge pile of unforgotten mail last night and found a brochure about mold enviro consulting- affordable mold control... put in call, waiting to hear back.

they bring an on site microscope

called Enviro Health Consulting. anyone hear of them? they do work in CT, DC, MD, NJ, PA , VA. says they also test for EMFs and lead and water too.

Sometimes, yes. I believe some of the mold remediators can be of assistance with helping get that question answered for a specific situation.

I guess just one other thought on this ... I am sure for some of us here, dealing with mold will be an important ingredient in achieving our health goals. For others, perhaps not. Perhaps the home is moldy, but it is not where the attention needs to be placed.

I bring this up only so people give that some good thought, as dealing with the mold remediation is very expensive. Dr. S believes he has discovered genetic testing that indicates if someone is very susceptible to mold illness, so having that testing done could help answer the question of whether dealing with mold in the home should be a big priority. I know for me it indicated susceptibility, and my experience has confirmed that.

Of course, first hand experience is sometimes all one needs in order to be sure. If you get that sick coming and going into moldy places, then no testing needed to know.

The mold tests are valid & can be obtained from the Home Depot. The mold grows on the petri dish & they view them via microscopy to tell you what species you have.

It is tough to tell someone what to do with their house, because really that is dependent on a few things:

1) Your sensitivity & symptoms to mold. Not everyone in your family even with Lyme will respond that same way. In fact not even you will respond in the same exact way from earlier Lyme infection vs later stage Lyme (as was the case with me).

2) The extent of the water damage & active visible mold areas and the continued state of water/moisture availability.

3) The amount of material (both structural (beams, joists, sheetrock...etc) & non-structural (clothes, curtains, rugs, couches...etc) that has been contaminated mold spores & that may subsequently produce more mold & spores on the new surface. After the leak there were many items (ex. cardboard storage boxes) that I could not stand & reacted to with symptoms if I remained around them for lengths of time.

4) Level of poverty after Lyme treatment & your ability to afford a total overhaul. Personally I only got rid of most items that were directly in the basement & the ones most directly impacted. I kept most of my items & we cleaned them as much as possible & we continue to clean them & use things like Windex & Pledge wood cleaner to prevent growth.

Venting & Baking Soda Paste (BSP) (paste with enough water to make a thick paste) has worked wonders for me. The baking soda paste is good for heavily afflicted areas, like those in bathrooms. Basically apply paste & leave overnight & then clean up the next day.

Warning to those who use BSP, as when I applied it to my screen door, which always produced mold around the silicone lining, it produced so much toxins that it shook me, gave me heart palps & caused me to feel so unwell in less than 24 hrs. I had to evacuate & vent the whole house for a while before I could re-enter.

For surfaces that were far away from the ground zero leak you can use 2-3 cups of baking soda boiled per 1 gallon of water to make a liquid solution, which you then add to a spray bottle & use to clean surfaces with. You can also wash clothes in 1-3 cups of baking soda, depending on your load size.

I still dont understand why you guys are not working with Dr S docs and reading his literature. A few years go he didnt have all the puzzle pieces together. Now he does. A very clear organized Protocol based on testing from lab corp, quest and one more lab.

Eleven certified docs...very hard course to get certified. Not like llmds where unless you have been around for awhile or have good contacts you dont know what you are getting

Lyme is a part of protocol because mold and lyme interact. When you tx the mold often the lyme sx go away

Its close to impossible to get better without getting out of the mold. It depends on your genes.

Once you start the beginning tx is cheap and many get well in the first few steps of tx. There are 11 steps but everyone doesnt have to do all of them.

Dr H talks about Dr S's protocol in his book

There was a second mold doc in MO i think...but he isnt seeing patients now. But he has a protocol similar to shoes

I just dont understand why...when therr is an organized protocol tht works thst is backed by science mold sick ppl dont just do it

You csn.mess around and do parts of it in the wrong order and never get better or you can do it and be better in a year or too

The longer you wait the harder it is esp if you have lyme

REMEDIATION IS A NIGHTMARE. BELIEVE ME. MANY COMPANIES ARE JUST OUT TO SCREW YOU. OTHERS MEAN WELL BUT DONT KNOW WHAT THE HECK THEY ARE DOING.

I began dealing with this 15 yrs ago. I learned a lot then. I was well for 15 yrs because i was out of mold. I got reexposed last march...was in bed all of august...found shoe doc cuz er and pulmonary specialusts dont have a clue

Would someone please explain to me why mold and lyme groups dont get along?

This is real but now that i am , experiencing it i see mold ppl being really angry and nasty to lyme ppl and i see lyme ppl ignoring mold as a problem

(Not you guys here...who are dealing with it...but many)

Please tell me what is going on. Im too foggy to get stuff that isnt talked about directly

kayak, I am so new to all this compaired to someone like you, but what I think is the riff between mold an dlyme is:

lyme and mold have such similar sx, so that the mold people think its all mold and the lyme people think its al llyme.

OR

the lyme people don't want to admit that if they never had a + test for lyme that they could possibly never had lyme at all - that it was mold! and so they don't want to damage their pride

that is the first thing my husband said yesterday when I told him about this mold. he said- "so you never had lyme?" well, I had 2 + tests that said I did/do. so I thnk in my case (maybe) the lyme ruined me and messed everything up making my genes react and be thrown into their born state which is perfect for not letting go of mold so that mold then is a big problem for me.

or some kind of auto imune illness did it. I have had some major illnesses my whole life, so who knows what came first. doesn't matter.

it is just like the MS ppl and the ALS ppl and everyone else that tested + for tick disease after years of the wrong tx. either you accept it and go on, or you fight it because of pride.

just like politics. but we wont' go there [Wink]

thanks for info on Dr S. I will check it out.

I do notice though, that since all my treatments for tick disease I do feel better when around moldy things.

not saying that is ok now to do that, but I used to react so fast to any mold, while now I may not as much. typically.

HERE is a realy good read someone jsut sent me-----

http://www.royalrife.com/mold_toxins.pdf

a portion of it:
"About 24% of the population have a genetic makeup that makes them unable to produce
the needed antibodies for mold toxins. The body simply does not adequately tag the
toxins as invaders and it does not e
liminate them. The liver can send them to the digestive

tract via the bile, but they are quickly reabsorbed back into the blood. The result is that
continual or repeated exposures to mold toxins results in an ever increasing amount of
these toxins in the body. Those who can actually smell musty odors where they live or
work usually have the worst mold toxin problems.

It is estimated that 10 million
American children are being exposed to mold toxins (many are medicated with "Ritalin"
as a result) and around 25 million Americans have some degree of mold toxin illness.
It is also common to have a genetic makeup that does not detoxify Lyme toxins and many
cannot detoxify either mold or Lyme toxins. If they have Lyme disease, Lyme toxins also build up in the body.

These are the people that get very sick and stay sick when they do frequency treatments for Lyme. FOR THOSE WHO GET MAJOR PROLONGED DIE-OFF REACTIONS, FREQUENCY TREATMENTS FOR LYME ARE NOT
RECOMMENDED UNTIL THE TOXIN ISSUE IS ADDRESSED.

These mold and Lyme toxins attach to fat cells and cause the fat cells to continually
release inflammatory cytokines. The result is chronic inflammation with symptoms such as fatigue, pain, brain fog, out of control weight gain and loss of sex drive. When a person h
as the flu, symptoms are not caused directly by the viruses. The symptoms are caused by the resulting cytokines. Mold and Lyme toxins can cause symptoms similar to
a permanent case of flu."

Kayak -- Do you have a link or suggestion on how to get the list of the 11 certified docs? I considered going to the big guy probably 3 years ago, but that was too much of a trip, and still is. I'd love to see some other options.

I am a little surprised this was edited for name, as I didn't see this as a lyme doc. Not outraged or disturbed, but surprised; just honestly trying to follow the rules. Could you explain what criteria was are to use regarding the names?

Do any of you have issues with food?

Do white potatoes, beans, winter squash bother any of you with mold issues?

Do you notice throat issues, excess phlegm after eating the above?

I am just curious as A family member has problems eating these foods and they have no allergies with these foods.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Some ppl on mold sites talk about staying away from moldy foods. But its complicated. From what ive read foods that get moldy in your kitchen are usually not a bad mold.

But foods that "feed the mold" can make you worse. There are diets out there but worst foids( from my llmd) are sugar, yeast, wine, beer, vinegar, mushrooms and peanuts

Recently i read a lot of coffee is too

I ws told by allergist i am allergic to melon and when i eat it my throat itches and i can get excess phlegm

There is a diffetence between mold allergy and mold illness

wow, I just had mold tester people here alll day. so tired. wow, what an experience .and KEEBLER will be happy to know that they also check for electro everything.

that was my biggest surprise- the Xbox even turned OFF caused so much disturbance! we have to unplug it to make a difference in the pulsed waves it was amazing. just amazing.

and we found so many other things ..... it was so worth it, by a very nice owner of a very intelligent company.

and KAYAK, they aske me if I had heard of shoemaker. the woman in charge was treated by him.. a while back . they knew so much. I am so exhilarated. yay.

Guys I also found that hot baths for as long as I can take them & as hot as I can take them will reduce the additional mold symptoms down to nill (everything but the nose) & allow me to be in the moldy place for a few hours, but the cycle start again where I need another hot bath.

It is as if the induced fever kills the spores lodged in the lungs, throat, & mouth. The nose is harder to get to though & I would have to submerge & breath through a straw in order to accomplish the nose, which I have not done yet.

Here's an great interview with Dr. Shoemaker explaining how biotoxic triggers (including Lyme, mold, etc.) can lead to "Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome":

http://chriskresser.com/dr-ritchie-shoemaker-on-chronic-inflammatory-response-syndrome/?mc_cid=1682442a53&mc_eid=5fe78f5876

Kayak...Although his research is great, I think the reason that not everyone embraces this doc's protocol is that it is not always well tolerated and/or has not always been effective for some (I know several people who have personally not had success.)

FYI, some of these people are pursuing and being helped by mild hyperbaric, which also treats toxic injury:

Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen on Toxic Injury due to Mold Exposure: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2998645/

Also beware of mold inspectors that also do remediation (or work in conjunction with companies that do) for obvious reasons...

I e been told to absolutely not go with a company that does testing AND remediation, as it is a conflict of interest.

This is the same problem with the mold plates from Home Depot... All homes have mold and if you buy the plates they will be positive. Having someone who can analyze the results and tell you if the mold levels are elevated enough to cause issues is important. Or if there is a type of mold present that is bad.

You don't want to pay someone who finds normal levels of mold to scare you into paying for expensive remidiation, when all you might need is to reduce dampness (or the mold spores are normal environmental counts - ie why you need an outdoor control sample)

I'm also wary of the dogs, because an inspector should be able to find the same problem areas with air sampling and thermal scams, and dogs can't tell you what species of mold there is, so you still have to have a person sample.

Phoiph-it took me awhile to decide to follow shoe. His protocol has changed over the years. Alot of ppl are still in toxic environment and dont know it. No ones petfect but i was at a standstill with lyme tx and now feel improvement so im going for it

Excellent advice about remediators...so many i warn about that just dont understand. Smart ppl...but its so complicated. And the law is not on our side. Buyer beware.
