I am so concerned and confused. My dear Angie was over and for a while she seemed to be ok, not great but ok.
I helped her with some paperwork she needed done and although she wasn't thinking clear, and would suddenly have a look of being dazed, she was speaking clearly.
Then after a walk out side, with a cane and holding a hand, she came in an then began to be unable to speak clear. It became hard to understand her words.
She was frustrated because she could not get words out. My son says this happens often.
Can anyone explain this? My heart breaks for them both

My counselor lost ability to find words when she had severe neuro infection..i have caught myself thinking two words and saying one blended word.. studdering when i used to be very eloquent. ...i believe it is bloodflow issue to brain or infection itself...my grandma slowed down speech after mini stroke for which the ducks did nothing...very sad

When I was at my worst, my speech would slur. Any mild activity would make it worse. Activity would make all symptoms worse.

Depending on the situation -- this will not work in all cases --
In the short term -- sugar. When a sick person is walking but can not talk, there is obviously a sudden loss of energy somewhere. She is walking but there is no energy left to operate the speech center.
Obviously this means there's a severe problem with metabolism but in the short term, feeding sugar --which floods tissue and is handled in less than a minute - might give some nutrition to the speech center.
Other short term therapies -- have her swing her head below her heart. Hypoperfusion. Get blood to the brain. Blood carries both oxygen and nutrition so this might help.
This might be some sort of variety of POTS. If she is walking, but loses her power of speech, it could be an issue where circulation is too compromised to handle both.
Blood volume. If it's low, it's POTS; salt repletion can help.
In the long term, think about a ketogenic diet.

When I was sicker than I am now and after exertion, my speech was all out of order, I couldn't recall the right words, and my speech would slur at times. I was on IV rocepherin via a PICC line at the time, and I would herx quite badly. At the time, I had major neurological issues. Best wishes to your friends.

- With exertion, and especially when senses are overwhelmed or vertigo is worse, my speech has been very slurred at times.
It's a sign that the person REALLY needs to get to a quiet and still place to rest and not push at all. Even conversation can be far too taxing. -

Thank you all so much. Those of you that have experienced this, are you better? Is there really hope? She is currently under treatment with a LLMD but doing only natural things. We are seeing another LLMD that we believe will give abx, maybe even IV. We are praying for Hope.

Lyme and co infections affect the brain big time. I used to say the wrong words all the time (but meant to say something else). I also couldn't remember anything either. Not anymore. My cognitive issues are much better than they used to be.
Your friend just needs treatment from a good LLMD.

I'm another one jumping on the bandwagon in saying that it happened to me.
I remember being soooo frustrated since I was trying so hard to communicate and no one could understand me.
The doctor thought it was a stroke at that time since I had not yet been diagnosed with Lyme. Within that week, I had a positive test result back.
The positive news is that it does get better with lyme treatment, but while it is going on, it's scary for the person going through it as well as the people around them.

- Fluorescent lights can make it worse. Strips, checks, patterns with sharp contrast, mini-blinds, etc. too.
Scents, chemicals as well.
Being one degree too hot or too cold for me, too. -

Oh yea, Flourescent lighting always did a number on me neurologically. Also places where too much was going on. I had to stop going to church and stores. I remember family events, like Christmas gathering were way too stimulating.
