Hi guys, as part of my protocol for intestinal amoeba and systemic protozoans I'm supposed to take 1500mg [500mg 3x] a day of Flagyl. Is it safe to take this high dose daily for 2 weeks on ,2 weeks off? I likely wouldnt do this for more than 2 months...
Supposedly its good to take a b vitamin complex daily as well to reduce the chance of nerve damage? Thanks!

Hi, I developed B6 toxicity from a very small amount of supplemental B6, which I took after reading on here that I should take B Complex 3 x daily. (Can't afford LLMD). From what I understand, getting B6 by eating lots of high B6 foods will not hurt you, but the Neurologist told me never to take supplemental B6 again.
This has meant no B Complex for me, which is sad, since it was helping my depression. I do take SL Methyl B12 for my MTHFR gene defect and the Benfotiamine form of B1 to keep uveitis in remission and now also, ironically, for my nerve pain. I never got rid of it entirely, but it is 95% controlled by Benfotiamine and R-Lipoic Acid, plus a low carb diet. (Found out I was pre diabetic on top of all this, when it didn't go away after months off B6).
I had nerve pain for years before taking generic Flagyl, due to also having Fibro. Metronizadole was a MIRACLE for me, with no side effects, as it eliminated ALL of my symptoms while I was on it and for about 2 weeks after that, a total of 5 weeks. I was not given such a high dose. Mine was twice daily. Later the "SIBO" came back, as expected when you use ABX to get rid of it, and I took it again, getting another 5 weeks of normalcy. Then my GI doc would not give me more and tests showed I had zero lactobacillus colonies, so I've been working at raising probiotics ever since. It is supposed to be the toughest drug for probiotic levels to recover from. Interesting, my Bifidus levels were optimal, even after the drug.
The Neurologist told me she wished she had a dollar for every case of B6 toxicity she'd had to diagnose over the past year. If any of you know of a B Complex with: 1. NO B6 2. Methyl B12 only 3. Methyl Folate (B9) only Please do post and let me know.
I guess we are all different. I hope you are one of the lucky ones.

I took flagyl daily for 60 days straight, but at half the dose you are taking.
This combined with amoxicillin and probinecid is how I got rid of lyme disease over 11 years ago now.
Years later when I got C diff from antibiotics my ENT gave me, a week of flagyl made me think I would DIE.
So, it could be very tough to endure depending on what is living in your stomach. Flagyl kills many, many things including parasites, and it can make some people very ill.
Hope you are able to do this. I expect the first 2 weeks would be the worst. Then, much easier after that.
From Burrascano (as a reminder to you--take all this very seriously):
"Important precautions: 1. Pregnancy while on Flagyl is not advised, as there is a risk of birth defects.
2. No alcohol consumption! A severe, "Antabuse" reaction will occur, consisting of severe nausea, flushing, headache, and other symptoms.
3. Yeast overgrowth is especially common. A strict anti-yeast regimen must be followed.
4. Flagyl can be irritative to the nervous system- in the short term, it may cause irritability, "spacey" feelings, etc. Longer term, it can affect the peripheral nerves, causing tingles, numbness, etc. If mild, a change in dose may be required. Often, extra vitamin B can clear these symptoms. If the nerve symptoms persist or are strong, then metronidazole must be discontinued or these symptoms may become very long lasting.
5. Strong Herxheimer-like reactions are seen in almost everyone." (p. 15)
Regarding the alcohol, be sure you don't use alcohol in mouthwash or anything else that is put in your mouth, even though not swallowed. Evidently it doesn't take much alcohol at all to cause the severe antabuse reaction.

TF, are you saying that flagyl and amox alone cured your Borrelia infection? That's quite interesting since I've never heard of that combo being used for Borrelia [you often hear about minocycline, ceftin, rocephin, doxy, etc]

Yes, TexBart. Amoxi is great for lyme. See p. 14 of Burrascano. It kills the spirochete form. And, flagyl kills the cyst form, so together the lyme cannot escape.
See p. 12-13 "Combination Therapy" to learn why taking just one med at a time will never work.
See the proper dosages of amoxi on page 18.
I picked up my amoxi in quart-sized containers from the pharmacy.
It only took 2 months of this treatment and then my doc moved on to treat bart. Then, babs, then I was done.
I was on lousy lyme treatment for 2 years prior to getting to my good Burrascano-type doctor.
My Burrascano type doc thought that he would have to retreat me for lyme at the end of the babs treatment, but it was unnecessary in my case.
I tell everyone that my doc told me at the very first appointment that I would NOT get well unless I did the Burrascano exercise requirement--one continuous hour of weightlifting every other day (light weights, numerous repetitions, a full body workout each time).
Read what Burrascano says about this in his Lyme Rehab section. This type of exercise boosts your immune system and eventually gets it back to normal. This is the ONLY way you will overcome lyme.
So, don't give the amoxi all the credit. It is just part of the Burrascano protocol. The other parts are supplements, diet, and the weightlifting.
Start the weightlifting as soon as possible and you should make great strides. I could not even hold the phone to my ear for more than 30 seconds, but still I started the weightlifting. So, don't think you are too weak to start!
I had had lyme undiagnosed for at least 10 years before a doc tested me for lyme and I found out I had it. Still, I got well.
So, study the Burrascano Guidelines and see the 4 classes of meds that are used to treat lyme. The list of specific meds is long. So, if you have a bad reaction to one, you can try another.
I had some bad reactions and allergic reactions. My top notch lyme doc was able to work around these and treat me for lyme, babs, and bart and I became symptom-free after just 8 months.
My sleep problems resolved after about just one month on his lyme treatment.
Flagyl is a great drug, but it can cause bad side effects. You must be aware of side effects for every drug you try. Be on the look-out so you don't get burned.
