Hi. My spouse became acutely ill a week and a half ago and ended up in the hospital - rash, high fever, headache in the front of her head, nausea and vomiting. Sure looks like a tick borne illness and she responded well to the doxycycline - within 24 hours, the fever had broken, no headache, etc. (the infectious disease specialist says she has a CMV infection, but I'm skeptical). In any event, she has a low fever again tonight - around 100. Has anyone else had a recurrence of symptoms while taking doxycycline? Maybe it is a viral infection after all, but... that Dx just doesn't feel right. Any help/insights would be much appreciated!

Hey Crobin! Welcome to LymeNet!
Sorry to hear about your spouse feeling so bad. Bless her heart.
There are many reasons she could have a fever at this point. I can't say why, but here is some food for thought.
2. High fever and vomiting sound more like a confection to me. Has she been tested for spotted fever, ehrlichiosis and/or anplasma? Here is some info on diagnosis, symptoms and treatment for various tick borne infections. https://sites.google.com/site/marylandlyme/tick-borne-diseases
3. She may have killed off some of the infection and "round two" is acting up? Hoping she is continuing on the Doxy!
4. The rash- what did it look like and where was it?
5. There are Lyme strains that are actually "relapsing fevers". Different from the Lyme caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. IF this is a tick borne disease, she may have been infected with a relapsing fever strain and or other tick borne illnesses.
These are just some thoughts to get you some possible answers. If you want to know what to do, in my opinion, I would watch the fever and if it goes up any further I'd get her back to a regular doctor or to the ER. (NOT the infectious disease doctor.)

Thanks so much. The tests for Lyme and RMSF were both negative, but my understanding is that it takes awhile for the antibodies to build up enough to pop positive. The rash was not petechae, although it looked more like that on her legs. Full body, blotchy, didn't itch, didn't hurt. So many bugs, so few tests, and even less understanding by the docs. Very frustrating. Thank you for the response and the links!
