I know there is a controversy about flu shots. My Primary wants me to get one, but I have chosen not to as of yet. I did get the flu last year and was knocked out for 2 weeks, but got through it. I have asthma which is under control. Do you think increasing Vitamin D and C and doing Sambucus along with Multi and fish oil is enough to help avoid it?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Even if you get the flu shot, you may get the flu as it is never 100% effective.

I had the only flu shot of my life about 9 months after getting Lyme. I was almost well and it really set me back and gave me myoclonic seizures.

I will never get another flu shot.

Patty,

Most LLMD are well aware that many with lyme do not do well with various vaccines. In fact, some have really bad reactions and can suffer for quite some time afterward.

I had several terrible and life altering reactions over the years before I knew I had lyme and also before I was able to get educated about just what's in each one and why my particular body had / has such trouble.

It is always best of you can find a good LLMD or LL ND and they get to know your body and they can guide in this matter.

Same with any Rx, really, or procedure. If a doctor does not know and fully understand what happens to a body with lyme, other tick-borne infections then they simply don't have what it takes to counsel / guide / treat someone with lyme, et al.

Lyme, other TBD change so much about the human body. So much.

We cannot rely on doctors who have not had a full education about lyme / TBD.

Talk to a good ILADS educated "minded" LLMD / LL ND.

The links in set above also give you some ways to help.

And, you know what, by avoiding acetaminophen (a major step)

and also learning which herbal supplements help support immune function, the elements of a good diet, sleep hygiene

and which herbal supplements are also anti-viral & / or anti-bacterial, you can devise your own support plan.

A naturopathic doctor could help here, too.

And the books by master herbalist Stephen H. Buhner. Great books loaded with excellent detail.

Avoid dairy. It really seems to mess with a lot of people and make immune systems work harder . . . create phlegm . . . raises insulin even if not glucose . . . and causes inflammation.

keeping inflammation low is key.

Avoiding sugar and carbohydrates that turn to sugar in the body right away, too, since that causes inflammation, high glucose and also damage.

We have lot of ways we can be proactive.

I suggest avoiding acetaminophen because it stops the liver from being able to produce glutathioine, a key need during any illness.

Milk Thistle is a good herb to help the liver make glutathione.

And avoid acetaminophen is so very important.

At the first sign of a cold or flu, I take 2 -3 drops of oreganol in a shot glass of water. You can put in gelatin capsule but either way drink a glass of water too.

In 11 years I have never gotten a cold or flu.

oh, and I do that periodically through the day.

I load up on lots of Vit C at the first sign of a flu and can knock it out that way. Each capsule is 1000mg; I just keep taking them until the symptoms go down.

I got the flu shot 4 weeks ago. My upper arm was a little achy for about a day, that’s it.

For me, the decision to get the vaccine was easy. I cannot afford to get the flu this year, my body is too weak as I’ve recently suffered several bouts of pneumonia & bronchitis.

We are all very unique individuals & we need to do what’s best for each of us. I would recommend talking with your team of doctors, they can help guide you to make the best informed decision for you.

The flu shots are made with the strains of the previous year virus.

Which means, only the lucky ones who get the exact last year strain which has not yet mutated MAY be 'protected'.

What I hear more and more, are people who get terribly sick WITH the flu after the flu shot.

I'm reading Buhner's book on viruses: these flu viruses mutate so fast (RNA viruses) that I wonder what's the real use of flu shots....

No doubt I would take his herbal suggestions more than any drug full of chemicals that are more likely NOT to protect me anyway from the flu...

Interesting you mention liver support. Had bloodwork and now liver enzymes are elevated. Looking for milk thistle now. Any recommended brands? Use to take pure encapsulations.
