I know that you're not supposed to eat minerals and dairy within 2 hours of taking doxycycline.

For some reason, I always assumed that "dairy" meant milk products -- milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, sour cream, ice cream, and snack foods with cheese powder on them, etc.

But what about eggs? Do they inhibit the absorption of doxycycline, too?

I've read this on lymenet too not to take Doxy within two hours of dairy. However on my pill bottle everytime I pick up my Doxy it states:

Take with Food or Milk

Confusing right?

I still don't drink milk within 2 hours but its curious

I don't consider eggs to be dairy. Eggs come from chickens, not cows. Milk, cheese, butter, cream are dairy items.

So, I have an egg a day, right along with the Doxy.

You have to eat something what else is there if everything else isn't allowed?

I hope the Doxy is working for me with my egg diet.

my reaction to EGG WHITES was included in my reaction to DAIRY PRODUCTS; that's where i was coming from when i stated above ... sorry! [Smile]

Geet, I'm guessing it's just "lazy labeling" -- probably the sticker they're putting on your prescription bottle for "take with food" just happens to include milk, which may be okay for other drugs, but not for doxycycline. Maybe you should notify your pharmacist?

As I mentioned, I'd always assumed the dairy warning on doxycycline was referring to milk products, but eggs *are* in the dairy section. Why?

I mean, not to sound juvenile (although I can be very good at it [Smile]

), but milk is for baby cows and egg whites are for baby chickens.

So is there something in both of them that's similar? Do eggs contain a lot of minerals? I'm sure egg shells do, but I'm not planning on eating those.

Wikipedia shows that eggs do contain Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Zinc, so maybe it's best not to eat with doxy?

I'm just not sure!

If any biochemistry experts could weigh in, that'd be great.
