My daughter started IV Rifampin for Bart 2 days ago and it seems to have made her insomnia much worse alsmost immediately.
We had it somewhat under control with Ambien and Alteril but those sleep aids didn't work at all the past 2 nights.
It seems like a direct tie between the Rifampin and insomnia.
Has anyone else experienced this side-effect from Rifampin and if so did it resolve over time.
We're hoping Rifampin is the medicine that takes away her neuro problem including an unending unilateral headache (left side pressure), agitation and insomnia.
Thanks in advance! Paul.

I am not sure if this applies to IV Rifampin, but I imagine it would. Rifaampin can make some pills work less well - sleeping pills included. It is something to be aware of.
Also, when I started abx my sleep initially got way worse. I started abx on a Tuesday. I didn't sleep almost at all that Thursday.
Sleep is still a huge problem for me. I have been on Rifampin since late September.
I use Ativan to sleep - rifampin effects ativan too, but I hear that it really effects Lunesta and such.
You can PM if you have further questions.

Rifampin caused my Ambien and Lunesta to not work well at all.
Instead, I used Xanax, and also tried Restoril which worked really well. These can be addictive though, so be careful. For me they were not.
Interestingly, since I started taking Minocycline, my sleep issues vanished. I think it has something to do with Mino's anti-inflammatory effects on the brain.

My daughter is on IV Rifampin as well. I believe that the Rifampin does make sleep meds. less effective. We had to adjust my daughter sleep meds. after starting Rifampin.

She will be pulsing IV Rifampin with IV Levaquin (4 days on Rifampin and then 3 days on Levaquin for at least a month).
We'll see where she's at at the end of the first month. We'll keep a close eye on the Levaquin due to the tendon issues it can cause.
Again, thanks for the feedback. Paul.

I don't know about the rifampin, but when I was first on Bart tx I had horrible insomnia that had been managed with sleep meds for years. It was especially bad when I was herxing.
