I started levaquin a week ago and about 5-6 days in, developed an itchy quarter-sized rash on my leg.
I had some bumps on my waist that I weren't sure were bart prior to treatment, but this is a new rash in a new area.
Has anyone had a rash develop as a result of a bart herx?
Why do we herx from Bart? I thought herxes were supposed to only be a spirochete thing.

Hi,
Yes I developed a huge rash about seven days into Levaquin. My internist made me go off thinking it was an allergic reaction. But I've since learned that the rashes I had were consistent with Bartonella rashes (not the typical stretch mark rashes, but mine were hive-like around my neck and a Christmas Tree rash down my spine).
I rarely herx from Lyme treatment but I herx like mad on Bartonella medications - Levaquin or Rifampin. I asked one of my LLMDs and she thought any of these diseases can cause a herx reaction.

Thanks Jill! Yes, mine are more like hives than streaks. They're actually a weird mix of bumps.
I'm hoping this means I actually have bart...it would be nice if I had ONE certainty with this stupid illness.

I got the typical bart streaks on my side while on doxy. I've read of the same thing happening to others.
When I first started levaquin I felt itchy and had hive like welts on my legs and sometimes my arms. The itchiness came close to the same time everdyay until I took a homeopathic that stopped it. Everytime I tried to stop the homeopathic, the welts and itching would come back. I was eventually able to stop the homeopathic without having the itching and hives. I'm pretty sure it was an allergic reaction or at least it sure felt like it was.

Can you tell me where you found info on Bart causing rashes other then the red streak ones?
About a year ago (I had already been sick for 4 years) I had a bullseye rash show up on my leg. It grew to be about 12" in diameter.
Once it got this big I developed hive like bumps all over my legs and arms that itched like crazy. The bumps were all different sizes and were definately coming from the bullseye.
When the bumps started going away they left these weird brown spots about the size of a quarter all over. I also had severe stinging sensations (like bee stings) constantly in the same areas.
I found some pictures showing that these brown spots are from Bart but, I have not been able to find anything about the bumps. This rash caused me some of the worst pain that I have ever been in and I would like to know if Bart caused it.
I think it was Lyme and Bart. Lyme for the bullseye and Bart for the bumps. I still get a couple random bumps even a year later.
I'm getting these red rashes on my ankles and legs. It's a itchy, slightly rasied red area, with clusters of red pinpricks in it. I also have some other spots, that do not itch, and red petachial dots on my feet; these also do not itch, but some of them are much more prominent/noticable than the last time they sprung up. There are fewer of them, though...
On Rifampin and Bactrim for bartonella. Also had these on Rifampin and Zithro several months back. Is this a herx or what???

I took some pictures of the rash on my ankle, and added them to my old thread.
There are also some pictures I uploaded last year of the spots on my feet, which recently came back. (They had went away with rifampin and zithro, and all my main bartonella symptoms went away. But then I started getting this new type of rash on my ankles that would come and go, too, as well as a strange new infection cycle that flares about once every 7 days. In August I got reinfected with flea bites, and started getting the feet dots rash again. But this new itchy-spot thing with the clustered dots on my ankles, is new. Is it just another stage of bart treatment? I last had it happen in July. If it were someone else I'd tell them it sounds like bartonella, but... )

Also, the B guidelines say this about bartonella:
quote:"...and red rashes. These rashes may have the appearance of red streaks like stretch marks that do not follow skin planes, spider veins, or red papular eruptions."
The latter sounds like my ankle-thing.
