My doctor has emphasized the importance of detox as a part of a healing path. I am no stranger to this philosophy, having a longstanding interest in holistic nutrition etc.
Recently I've been upping the ante since LLMD suggested I stop eating casein (was already off gluten for 2 years), eat ONLY organic, lots of raw foods, etc.
I am wondering who else follows a paleo-esque or other sort of detox-oriented diet in addition to antibiotics etc.
For those who do, is it at your doctor's insistence or is it something you have come to on your own?
I do not have an official lyme diagnosis yet -- we are waiting on my test results.
In the meantime, I'm really making an effort to clean up my diet/lifestyle... no more aluminum deodorant, that sort of thing.
Just interested to hear others' perspectives and experiences with this sort of thing!

- You probably already avoid all alcohol. That pretty much goes without saying but Dr. B. is very clear that absolutely no alcohol is allowed.
#1 food rule: avoid even a trace of aspartame/Nutrasweet/Equal/AminoSweet or MSG (Google for all those names).
It's actually best to avoid anything that is artificial. I see, though, that you are drawn to a a raw foods plan with the paleo diet. It need not be that extreme but some find variations of that to help.
If you have lyme, you will stand a far better chance of treatment success with a gluten-free diet but one that is low to moderate on the glycemic index - no processed foods, but foods straight from the garden, plant based proteins and low fat meats or WILD salmon - and good fats (extra virgin olive oil, nuts).
A MEDITERRANEAN DIET is the most common LLMD advice - just witout the bread. It's important to be GLUTEN-FREE.
Many also do best also avoiding dairy (including casein), corn, and maybe even soy.
Get to know QUINOA - just google it. It's the best non-gluten whole-grain. LENTILS, too, can be cooked a million ways and supply complex carbs, protein and minerals - with fiber that will carry you through and also help you body to take toxins out just through digestion.
For many, the paleo may be too severe as that is mostly raw and harder to digest for those with liver issues (as all lyme patients have). Lightly steamed veggies are easier for most - and some veggie juices can be added in moderation, with the pulp, too.
Some paleo plans go for raw meat or raw fish. This can be fatal, actually, as raw meats/fish can contain salmonella and many other infections or worms/parasites that may not even be a bother for a long time down the road.
Meats/fish must be cooked long enough at a precise temperature (or properly smoked but that can add lots of MSG, sometimes). -

I follow a detox regimine on my own accord.
While I feel that I could not completly heal without abx tx, they are only a part of the picture for me. There are many other things that one can do to fight lyme.
I pass most things by my LLMD to make sure nothing is contraindicated and he supports my efforts.
Would he suggest these things on his own? I dont know but I am naturally oriented this way so I do my thing.
In addition to a gluten free/dariy free/red meat free/organic diet I also do a ton of juicing of select veggies. I recently started eating alot of quinoa (sp) which is found in alot of gluten free and vegan foods.
I exercise (run, hike, bike, swim and some weight training) when I am able to and recently added a sauna to my schedule. I am sure to do some light stretching everyday - espcially on those days when I am too sick to exercise..
I take supplements to help my detox and have recently added Cholestyramine to my protocol (prescription).
I feel much better when I am paying close attention to my detox. TG

check out the healthy low-carb recipes forum at Lymefriends- it's all gluten-free, although I did include some nightshade veggie recipes, which some LLMD's think can contribute to inflammation for some people. Just substitute other vegetables if the recipe calls for tomato or eggplant or pepper: http://lymefriends.ning.com/group/healthylowcarbrecipes I was keeping 'fatigued, homebound Lymies' in mind when writing them up, so some of the stuff includes mail-order sources for uncommon ingredients for those who can't get to a specialty market or Asian market or whatever else might be called for.
