My LLMD says to take with food in the evening.

Dr. s in his book says take on empty stomach in evening.

Obviously I'm gonna do what my LLMD says... but why do Docs differ on things like this?

I personally wouldn't take any of these abx's on an empty stomach. Can't imagine what that would do for yeast and my gut.

But do I run the risk of rifampi being less successful against Bart because it doesn't absorb properly?

"Dosage: To ensure optimal absorption, rifampin should be taken on an empty stomach (1 hour before a meal). Should gastric intolerance occur, the daily dosage may be taken after meals and/or reduced."

And the evening dose is common as well.

I started off taking Rifampin with food because of horrible nausea and dizziness, but as I got used to it, I was able to take it on an empty stomach.

I would start off doing as your LLMD says, and see if later on you can take on an empty stomach.

Rifampin's effectiveness is reduced when taken with food. Not sure why the LLMD would recommend with food, could always ask why. I take my dose in the morning an hour before breakfast with no issues, it seems much easier to take without food than other abx in my opinion.

Aimee,

I'm assuming because it can be harsh on the stomach.

Which seems to go for all abx's.

I take rifampin at bedtime and if I've been a good girl my stomach is empty, but sometimes I consume something bad late night.

I don't notice a change either way.

Just went for LLMD appt yesterday and he has me going back on rifimapin ): He told me to take it 1 hr before dinner. so we'll see.

If you can tolerate that.. would be better if you find its too hard then you'll have to take with food. Maybe you are super sensitive and your Dr knows that so figures taking it with food is better than not taking it at all.

You might try a few days with it an hr before food and see how you do...if ok call your Dr and let him know...ideally it should be takin without food (ie Hr before--after) but heay this isnt a perfect world and we are all still guinne pigs...lol.

Good luck,
Karen (:

I just don't understand why some abx's absorb better with food and some do better without food.

Oh well

think about it- your digestive system is in overdrive when you have food in your stomach. Some antibiotics have active ingredients that hitch a ride into the bloodstream in this process. Others are probably better absorbed if there's no 'other' material in the gut at that time.
