....or very soon after falling asleep.

Does any one else have this?

The last 2 nights have been horrible. Another member mentioned this possible could be "central sleep apnea" and now I am very scared.

My 1st LLMD appt. is not until next week.

Help!

Feels like your lungs get half full water can only get half breaths it stucnk and little scary I use to eliviate it by putting a fan on low and set in front of it and try to stay calm as i could.

Elevating your head with several pillows at night could help.

Hi there,
Don't be afraid, you won't stop breathing in your sleep. Our bodies are programmed to wake us up when this happens.

But get a sleep study asap. Good luck and keep us informed.

Yes, I had this problem. I had nightmares where I die in my sleep, and I wake up and I'm not breathing and gasp for air.

I'm pretty sure it's Babesia related.

Since being in treatment, this has improved.

And Loonies, right. It happened many times to me, but I wouldn't scare myself because of it. I learned to accept it as happening, and not stress myself fighting it.

It got better.

Good luck.

Happened to me during the worst of my disease....not before or since. I have no idea what it was....but definitely related to the Lyme somehow

I've had that miserable symptom. I agree with Sick Tick, it accompanied the worst part of my disease. It is SCARE-Y! It has a panic aspect associated with it that is really creepy.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Finally got to see my LLMD. Yippee :-)

Doxy apparently excerbates any acid reflux problem which mine was minor before and not on meds. She switched out the doxy and said to not lie down for at least 3 hours after eating. IT WORKED (knock wood). It has not happened since.

That was truly horrible and I hope it never returns.

Just wanted to share my experience for any of those suffering with the same thing. Might be worth a try.

True that our bodies are programmed to wake us up but people do die in their sleep from untreated sleep apnea all the time. Your chance of having a stroke is 400% higher if you have untreated sleep apnea according to my sleep doctor.

We had a man in his 30's with lyme die a few years ago in his sleep. He had been diagnosed with sleep apnea the day before he died. He didn't have his machine yet. We can only guess that it was sleep apnea that caused his death but we never heard what they determined as the cause of death. My son-in-law worked with a man who fell asleep in his chair at work and died because he did not have his machine on. It happens.

If you have untreated sleep apnea you can fall asleep at the wheel of your car and kill yourself and other people too!

Please have this checked out if you are waking up gasping for air. That is the only sign I had of sleep apnea and it only happened a few times and yet I had very bad sleep apnea.

I've had this off and on for years.
It happens when I lie down to nap sometimes, not just at night.
I don't know why it's off and on ... or if it might be happening more than I'm aware (perhaps it causes some of the nighttime awakenings?)
Does anyone know if you need to have an in-house sleep study done for this, or can you wear something to detect it at home?
A sleep study is thousands of dollars I'm told, and some people never sleep in a strange place, so it's not even an accurate test.

If Babesia is causing this symptom you may notice it coming and going in weekly cycles
at some point. For me it came after treating
for Bb and Bartonella so after 9 months of treatment (doxy 5.5 mos. zithro 3 months with bactrim, clarithro 1 month. etc) anyway about 6 wks into the zithro the Babesia symptoms were very classic and cyclical. Have now taken Art and Bactrim for 10 wks and these symptoms
are better but not yet zero.

I was dx with sleep apnea about 10 years ago. Had all of the fatigue. Was put on CPAP but the fatigue persists.

My LLMD dx as CFS and possibility of Lyme. Said if you take care of the apnea and still so tired then it's the other stuff.

My mom's cousin had strokes due to undiagnosed sleep apnea. Now he's on CPAP and he's fine.

It can feel very claustrophobic at first when you wear the CPAP gear, but stick with it. You'll get used to it and it can save your life!

Sleep apnea. I've had this a lot. It's not as harmless as some will have you think. Although mine seems to have gone away on it's own after years of suffering from it.
