Please, I need contact info for Dr. J in CT!!! (phone, location.) How long is his waitlist?
I posted about a friend of mine who has a very sick 13 year old. At 11, she had a tick and a bull's eye. Was treated w/ abx. for 2 weeks. A week later had swollen knee, was treated for 2 years as ped. arthritis patient w/ steriods.
I suggested Dr. C in PA, pediatric LLMD and the mom made an appt. - 9 mo. wait list.
Three weeks ago the girl weighed 57lbs, today 50lbs. Her mom says her daughter is disappearing. She doesn't want to eat. She doesn't ask questions any more. She must be carried everywhere, she must be fed, wiped, everything.
Please help! There is little time!!!
Also, the mom is a single mom, was let go from her job 3 weeks ago (downsizing) and insurance runs out next Wednesday. Any ideas?

Often a local Lyme doc can get a very sick patient into another Lyme specialist much sooner. Our local doc has had "emergency" patients fly to Dr. H in CA and Dr. J in WA DC for immediate appointments.

Please keep us posted.
Prayers sent.
Maybe a trip to the ER is in order in the short term.
Maybe some fluids and liquid feeding via NG tube is necessary.
If she isn't eating/drinking that can put her in significant physical distress.
Hugs,

OK, breathing deeply...
Spent all morning getting ALL of your wonderful emails full of helpful info together to send to the mom.
Called my LLMD to see if he could make a call and get her in sooner (answer was his call wouldn't make a difference) and ask his advice (also suggested ER). He did say he would see her in two weeks if she wanted, as he's leaving on vacation tomorrow.
Then the mom called me. Still breathing deeply...
She had just gotten back from an appt. w/ lyme sensitive FP who will treat patients for 3 months until they can get in with LLMD.
The mom was much more calm and relaxed. FP said the girl gained 4 lbs. And the reason she was too sick to walk and in so much pain for last 4 days was from yeast die-off (he said yeast is in her blood).
He's had her on diflucan for 3.5 weeks. She's also on Carnivora and Parsley drops.
Mom said girl peed every hour, 5 minutes each time, just massive amounts yesterday and today she's up walking with much less pain.
So, all to say, girl is feeling better today and mom is not panicing thinking she's dying. In fact, mom is hopeful and calm.
Thanks everyone so much for your prayers, please keep them coming. Although the mom feels better, I'm sure the girl is not out of the woods yet.
I am trying to encourage mom to make appt. w/ LLMD who will see her soon. Mom is brand new to all this and very overwhelmed about how to proceed.
I think, at least for today, she just wants to relax and regroup.
I'll keep you all posted as events unfold.
Thanks again, everyone, for having my back and responding with such an outpouring of love and concern for this family!

I agree with Steve. I have crohns on top of Lyme. My doctors have told me that tissues will not heal if they are malnourished and dehydrated. She is the weight of an 8 yr regardless of gaining 4 pounds. I would still take her to the er for fluids and even to proceed with t p n. The t p n is liquid nutrition fed through an iv or tube. Please let me know if I can provide anymore help. Please keep us posted.

OK, I just called the mom and told her your idea about sending care packages and she started sobbing. (I think she liked the idea!)
You guys are the best!!
As far as ideas for inside the packages, she said Sudoku (sp?) puzzle games, books or gift card to a bookstore (we have Borders and Barnes & Nobles here), and she loves to do arts & crafts.
Anyone interested in sending a care package, I'll pm you her address. Wow, what an amazing idea... ---------------- I met the little girl today for the first time. She and her mom met me and my daughter at a park for lunch. It was really a nice time.
The girl (girl sounds so silly. Wish i could put her name on here but that wouldn't be right) is so very tiny. They said she takes after her grammy who is under 5'. This girl was 67lbs at her heaviest 2 years ago (pre-lyme). She's now 55 lbs.
But the top of her arm was no bigger around than a 50 cent piece. Anorexic looking for sure. The mom said the 2 years of steriods really affected her growth.
She walked from the car to the park table and ate lunch with us. She is a beautiful girl with the most captivating smile! Just a charmer!
But let me tell you the things I noticed... her fingers curl in. she says the muscles at the base of her fingers feel tight. also starting at the top of her psiatic nerve and going down behind her knee feels tight like that.
The elbow of her right arm can't straighten. It stays at about a 45 degree angle and now her other arm is tightening up. Her shoulders are and across the top of her back are also tight so that she has a hard time getting her arms up to brush her teeth.
Her tongue had a thick coating of white until last week when it began to get pink again. Remember she's been on diflucan for 3.5 weeks. (yeast)
She said the Pediatric Rheum. Arthritis specialist had her on IV Rocephin 2 times for 4 weeks at a time. She'd start to feel better but about a week after IV was done she'd get worse again. (Coinfection?)
The bottom of her feet have been hurting her lately. (coinfection!) Her ankle swelled two days ago that kept her from putting her foot down flat, but that is better today.
She said when she got the bull's eyes 2 years ago, she had one on her leg and one in the middle of the back of her neck.
They started as a little red bump but by the next day in school, they became very itchy. She was sent to the nurse who watched a red circle started to form around each of them. (bull's eye)
The nurse called the mom to take her to a duck and by the time the mom got to school, a second red circle was forming around the first circle of each one. And by the time they got to the duck, almost everything was gone.
Three days ago, she had a little red pimply rash across the bridge of her nose and both cheeks but thats gone now.
She gets stabbing pains in her arms and legs that come and go.
Her eye lashes are falling out. --------------------------
I hear you guys with the ER suggestion! I think Mom is glad to have her daughter feeling better and isn't convinced ER is necessary at the moment. The girl is eating and drinking and peeing like crazy AND the FP today did not appear overly concerned.
Mom did listen when I said she needs to find an LLMD to fully help her daughter. She's on Dr. C. in PA's waitlist but it's 9 months long! How to find a good doc with a short waitlist?
I told her to call certain LLMDs tomorrow and find out their waitlist time and if they'd even see a 13 year old and then we'll go from there.
Thanks to so many of you who offered to help get her in w/ certain LLMDs. I really appreciate it and please know that I will pm you if/when we get to that point. Who knows, it may be tomorrow.
OK, I'm pooped. Blessings, All!!

Sorry I haven't let you know what's going on recently. I know many of you have been wondering. I just heard from the mom after a few weeks.
She said her daughter, J, is being treated for yeast candida by lyme aware FP willing to help until LLMD visit.
Also, J, is being treated by Pediatric Rheumatoid Arthritis Specialist in Hershey for juvenile arthritis. J is on indocin, methotrexate wasn't working, so he wants to put her enbrel.
Both DRs are telling mom that the other Dr is making J worse. Who to believe for mom new to lyme?
J is given prednisone as that is the only thing that gives her relief, FP Ok'd it in minimal doses.
J will have 2 bad days, then a good day, then 3 bad days, then a good day, etc.
Today is a bad day. Her joints are swollen and freezing up, no one can touch her, she screams in pain.
Please, before new readers start screaming, you must see the whole picture...
2 years ago, after tick bite, positive test and 2 weeks treatment, DR said lyme was gone.
For the last 2 years specialists have told the mom that J has arthritis. Why shouldn't she believe them?
A few weeks ago, mom realized that treatment wasn't helping, J was getting worse, started looking at possibility of lyme being the cause.
Her EX is threatening to take her to court as he believes Pediatric Arthritis specialist should be the only dr. treating J.
Mom was laid off a few weeks ago, at this point has no insurance and is trying to get kids on medicare (?).
J just tested negative for lyme (shocker).
Mom has made appt. with LLMD, Dr. C. in PA, who has 9 mo. waitlist.
Mom told me this morning that she's open to finding new LLMD (maybe Dr.J in CT, maybe Dr.J in DC) as she doesn't know what to do at this point.
I know so many of you offered to help and were so kind. Please don't give up yet! Mom was too overwhelmed then, maybe she's ready for help now...
She is at FP appt. right now and asked me to post a question to you all. -------------------------------
Questions -
Has anyone here been treated for Lyme and for Arthritis? Can it (or should it) be done or not?
And question from me - Is anyone here familiar with Dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington Delaware. My LLMD's wife recommended J goes there to ER. She couldn't say enough about the excellent care given there, but I'm wondering if they treat lyme or just the arthritis?

Here in MN, you can walk into the county office and walk out with MA for kids. That easy in situations like this. And also food support.
Hope it is the same for her.
When I told my doc that the physical therapist wanted a steroid CREAM for my shoulder, I could hear her hair light on fire across the phone lines. Seriously. . pain meds would be much better for her long term. Steriods can make people never get well. : (

If she can't get into Dr. J, there is another doc in CT who sees children who trained under Dr. J and may actually a better fit in terms of getting individual attention. Dr. M in CT. You can pm me for phone number she wants it.
Dr. J in DC sounds very good though, if she can get in to see him.
This mom needs to read books on lyme and get on this site herself if she can. Her daughter should not be on steroids.
Dupont children's Hospital is much better than CHOP in my opinion and I have heard of them giving IV meds for lyme for a month (not enough). Might be worth a visit to the ER with a mention of the tickbite and perhaps a white lie about a bulls eye rash even if she didn't have one.
It's very hard with the EX issue. He needs to be educated as well.

On the ex-H issue... It's very important that the ex understand all the issues.
If there is any chance at all that Mom can invite ex-H to attend the LLMD appt - I would that would be the best case scenario.
Ex-H would have an opportunity to ask questions of an expert, and hopefully get some education about Lyme to help him support his child in getting well.
I know it can be hard for both Mom and Ex to put aside their own issues to work together, but really think that would be ideal for the daughter - to have both parents in agreement.
If that's not an option, perhaps there is a way to schedule a meeting with only the LLMD and the ex, so he can get a clear picture of what's happening in his daughter's body and how to help.
Best wishes to this family, what a hard situation!

I have lyme induced arthritis. Please, please have her look at the Roadback website www.rbfbb.org. There are many who use antibiotics to treat arthritis. Some can treat arthritis with just minocycline, others require IV clindamycin, and many are now discovering lyme is the culprit.
I am being treated for lyme, after years of negative lyme tests (including Igenex), because wonderful folks on the roadback site pushed me to seek out lyme treatment. Every day, another member tests positive for lyme. It's become an epedemic on that board.

Let's see: no insurance and no job, hostile exhusband, child on steroids longterm. If I were a lyme doctor, I would think twice about getting involved with this case.
This mother is even wavering on whether she should be on steroids for JRA or antibiotics for lyme. What a mess.
People have to be clear on what they want and they have to be educated to survive lyme. And they need to have supportive spouses or former spouses. You realize that CT used quarreling spouses against Dr. Jones? The last thing he needs is another complaint from an exhusband who doesn't agree with the treatment, or probably doesn't want to pay for it.

Is your fiend (or her ex-husband) willing to speak with one of the moderators from the Roadback? All have lyme induced rheumatic diseases, and are in remission or on their way.
I think it would give your friend great comfort to talk with someone who has been through lyme treatment and has conquered arthritis. They can provide corroboration on treatment protocols as it relates to JRA. They can help her sift through all of the choices that are being thrown at her.
I know they would be more than willing to offer their support.

What about getting the mom and the EX to watch the YouTube clips of "Under Our Skin" (not necessarily together)?
It would give the EX a better understanding of the issues and it provide clarity to the mom about what direction needs to be taken (example: whether or not to allow steroids).
That's what that movie did for me. I went from uncertain to focused & driven - overnight.

UPDATE:(the mom has given me permission to share her email with lymenet) ---------------------------------------- An update? well...here goes:
Naltrexone not working for J. This passed friday we switched her to Etannercept (enbrel). No options left to treat the arthritis. Its out of control. she is in school on a very modified schedule. I drive her in late, she starts late, and is picked up early every day at a different time. Needless to say I can not work a full time out of my home. I'm still trying to find work to do from home. She gets around school with her cane or wheelchair, depending on the day she is having. She's already missed two half-days of school. She leaves each class 5 mins early and has a designated friend help her get to each class. She has her own special table in the cafeteria, and 3 of her closest friends sit with her everyday. She has two lockers, a handi-capped bathroom to use in the nurse's station and her books are kept in each class w/a set that gets passed back and forth between me and her dad cuz she can't handle the weight of the bookbag.
She is off her lyme/arthritis diet I had her on because one of her doctors told me and my ex husband that i was starving her to death and if I didn't take her off the diet and get her on proper meds immediately he was turning me into social services/child care for neglect and malnutrition.
Because her inflammation level was last over 100, 106 to be exact, I now have to have my house tested for mold and radon issues. I do stand a good chance of serious mold issue for sure. If thats the case, my x just informed that he will be taking the kids to live with him until I can get the situation rendered. How the heck I'm going to do that I have no flipping clue. I'll probably end up letting the bank foreclose on my house to be honest with you. It is what it is and in the meantime, I'll continue to pray about it.
I'm still going to get her in to see an LLMD as soon as I can.
She is no longer seeing Dr. S (family doc helping until she can get in with LLMD) because he has admitted "defeat" in being able to help her and that he agrees with her being on Etannercept at this point in time. The arthritis is just taking over her entire body. She still only weighs 54 lbs. Can't seem to gain anything and keep it on. She has only been off her diet for 5 days.
For now, we are on Etannercept, prednisone temporarily cause she had a set-back today, daily vitamins, calcium, folic acid, parsley detox, carnivora (for lyme...I'm keeping her on it until I'm comfortable taking her off).
Not sure what all I filled you on the last time, I can't quite remember. Hard to believe my Babydoll is about to turn 13 next week! Time is just flying by me!
------------------------------
lou, I reread your post and it just scares me to death. You're absolutely right, but what does that mean for this mom and this little girl?
Just give up and die?
The good news is the mom watched "Under Our Skin" 2 weeks ago in a theater and cried the whole time. The beautiful blonde in the pool reminded her so much of J.

Like Lou says, I'd think twice about getting involved with this case if I were a Lyme doc.
The state of CT used quarreling spouses against Dr. J. The last thing he needs is another complaint from an ex-husband who doesn't agree with the treatment, or (most likely) just doesn't want to pay for it.
But God Bless our Dr. J. He views our children through his own lens.
We have a followup appt in Oct. I will gladly give our appt to this girl. As much as we need it, I realize that others like her need it more.

We know how desperate it is for this girl to get help. And so we try. However, at this point, all we can do is pray.
I've given all of your suggestions and LLMD recommendations over the months, all to no avail.

I am so sad when I read this whole thread. So glad there are people watching out for this child through the mom and I wish there was something I could (we all could) do more.
I will add her to my prayers at the very least and I hope things will change for the better and that your list of three things above comes true very soon.
Blessings

Gosh, I am so upset by this whole situation.
No doubt this mom loves her daughter. I can't imagine having such a sick child and a hostile husband and docs who disagree. She is dealing with all this plus school nonsense, has lost her job and is on the verge of losing her house. How much can someone take?
Good that the mom made an appt with an LLMD. But 6 more months of waiting is intolerable. Again, she is welcome to take our Doc J. appt. This isn't me being generous. It's just the right thing to do.
I do pray, and I will pray for what you asked.

I just got some info tonite that there has been an explosion of new cases here this year...
I have heard of @ 8, but I did not know about the ones in hosp.
I asked how they found it and they said they are just treating it!!!
Maybe we are making a dent---hopefully they are getting treated long enuf...
As for the dad---have him call the hosp there and see how many cases they have treated this yr....Grrrr...
If they let her go like they did Jessica who is getting trtmt. in Mexico---we should file charges...
Thats a thought--hire a lawyer to make them pay for it.

i agree about the doctor issue. look what happened in texas with our doctor.

A nurse...She said, " You would not believe the cases that have been in the hosp." --She said some get rashes on their hands and other rashes other places. But they are all real sick from tick bites.
I said, "I knew we have several running around but did not know about the ones in the hosp."
I said how are they finding it, and she said whatever they have they are just treating it with antibiotics..I told her to watch it. IV antibiotics can kill so be prepared with a temp. pacemaker....
