Such as Nexium......

This is specifically about seniors, but also about anyone who has been on these drugs a long time. (like me)

Makes us more prone to c.diff .. and more....

I am curious about this too.

I took prilosec for about a year. Didn't have any problems with it.

I have been off of it for several months now. Am thinking I might need it again. Having slight reflux issues; but considering taking it every other day.

I don't like the idea of not having enough acid in my stomach. But at the same time, I prefer not to have a hole eaten into my esophagus.

I wanted a PPI for bart treatment. It would keep intracellular bugs in the cell where they would die but my LLMD did not want to give me a PPI because he said I would be more prone to C. diff.

Reflux for me seems to be related to H. pylori, a common infection in lyme patients.

I'm with you, suthern.... I don't really want to be taking this stuff... but value my esophagus too!

Terry.. I know I've been tested at least twice for H.pylori... nada.

I've been told the tests aren't very accurate. Hmmm.... where have we heard that before??

i've been on 40mg of nexium for 4 years. going to try to wean off after treating bart.

Taking a PPI can make you more prone to c.diff, and also cause an increase in SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).

Nexium is 4x stronger than other PPI's so a different one may be a better choice.

PPI's can also decrease calcium absorption, esp. in women so supplementation while on the is important.

For c.diff protection, make sure you guys take Florastor. [Smile]

You might want to try something like pepto bismol or ranitidie before you start a PPI. Even Carafate can help the stomach, or DGL.
