My mom was diagnosed a few weeks ago with ALS, but they never tested her for Lyme Disease. Can you send me some doctors in the area of St. Simons/Savannah, Ga or Jacksonville Florida who might be able to just test her for Lyme Disease? We just want to make sure she doesn't have Lyme instead of ALS.

That is brilliant. I cannot recommend a MD, but you are correct to follow through with testing. I know a lady in tennessee who also had Lyme, was treated, then she 'got ALS' a couple years later .. really. She was a healthy, vibrant 39 yr old. It is more likely the Lyme was not eradicated, other people have had ALS then later found actually to have Lyme. See a LLMD. I NEVER had a CDC positive test and still had Lyme diagnosed by an Infectious disease MD! Tests are not that accurate obviously. I live in Savannah and I can tell you there are no LLMDs here -- Take care, P.

Welcome to Lymenet! PM sent for FL. Your dear Mom needs to be evaluated and treated by a Lyme-literate doctor (LLMD). Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease or its complex treatment! They are far and few between, unfortunately. You need to go where they are. Also, most LLMDs do not accept insurance due to the politics surrounding this horrible disease. Read poster TF's explanation, "Why Lyme Doctors Don't Take Insurance":http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/2/15615?#000005 There was one in Tampa, but he retired. None in GA. When you call for an appointment, ask if there are any cancellations or a waiting list. Patients have been able to get in sooner by doing this. Check the online state Lyme groups at:http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/floridalyme Maybe they can help you. Some more resources for you (including Support Groups):www.lyme-aware.org/florida.html The top LLMD, Dr. H, has written a new book entitled, "Why Can't I Get Better?". It is an excellent source of information. Also read "Cure Unknown" by Pamela Weintraub. Check your local library or buy it used on Amazon. View "Under Our Skin" for free on www.hulu.com
