34 year-old female seeking LLMD in SE FL!! 2 weeks ago tomorrow, tore the meniscus in my right knee, after the PJ concert, & have been using walker & cane ever since because can not straighten, or bend, knee all of the way!
Got diagnosis & MRI Results, but, due to insurance requirements, must see PCP, first, (Just got health insurance again in 2016, but have not found a Lyme-Literate Doc yet!!) for Orthopedic Surgeon referral!
Insurance Co. suggested that a Dr., with faxed notes & results, might write referral without my having to be seen, since I can't walk, but I'd prefer to find the right LLMD PCP now, if possible, instead of having to search again after this emergency issue is resolved!!
Your valued time, attention, assistance, & anticipated response are so greatly appreciated! Thank you!! Take Care! :-)
You need to be evaluated and treated by a Lyme-literate doctor (LLMD). Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease or its complex treatment!
LLMDs are specialists, so they will not be PCPs. Contact the FL Lyme Support Groups I listed below to see if they can recommend a PCP to you in order for you to get your referral. I don't think doctors would write a referral, though, without you being a patient of theirs.
A LLMD is one who has treated Lyme disease and the co-infections which come with it for many years and has gotten patients well. A good one will follow Dr. B's Guidelines, the "gold standard" for Lyme treatment.
Unfortunately, LLMDs are far and few between. You need to go where they are. There was one in Tampa, but he retired.
Also, most LLMDs do not accept insurance due to the politics surrounding this horrible disease. Read poster TF's explanation, "Why Lyme Doctors Don't Take Insurance":
Btw - please break up your posts into 2-3 sentence paragraphs, as there are people on Lymenet who cannot read large blocks of text due to neurological problems from Lyme.
To do that, click the pencil/paper icon, make your changes, then click "Edit Post". Thanks.

Sorry for the previous, unedited long post!! And, Thank You So Much for your prompt reply! Great resources & information!!
UPDATE: I have Monday appointment with new PCP, and an appointment with an Orthopedic Surgeon later this week, but I may still change my Primary Care Physician, when it is not such an emergency, if I can find 1 on my plan that is Holistic, & more accepting & open-minded about alternative therapies...
I did not realize that ALL Lyme Doctors are Specialists, so that is helpful to know! :-) I did already get the name of one nearby female LLMD, from another LLMD inquiry that I sent on another website. I left a message with her office, but will call back next week, if I don't hear from them soon.
Thanks, again, for all of your help & info!! :-) Take Care!
