My son, currently age 15, was diagnosed with Ehrlichiae two years ago and with Bartonella this month. He is very sick and the doxycycline his pediatrician put him on has not helped. Looking for a doctor with knowledge of tick illness for help

Your son needs to be evaluated and treated by a Lyme-literate doctor (LLMD). Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease or its complex treatment!
A LLMD is one who has treated Lyme disease and the co-infections which come with it for many years and has gotten patients well. A good one will follow Dr. B's Guidelines, the "gold standard" for Lyme treatment.
LLMDs are far and few between, unfortunately. He needs to go where they are (none in OK). At least half of all Lyme patients travel out-of-state for their care.
When calling for an appointment, ask if they have any cancellations or a waiting list (call every day if you have too!). Patients have been able to get in sooner by doing this.
Read the books written by the top LLMD, Dr. H, titled, "Why Can't I Get Better?" and his new one, "How Can I Get Better?". They are an excellent source of information.
Also read "Cure Unknown" by Pamela Weintraub. Get it at your local library or buy it used on Amazon.

How far are you willing to travel to see a really good doctor? There is a doctor in Washington, D.C. who only requires in person visits once every 6 months. You could do telephone appointments the other months.
She comes highly recommended by state lyme associations, California doctors, and many more.
About a 3 1/2 month wait for first appointment.
Let me know if you want the name, prices, how she treats, etc.
I always recommend that everyone get to the absolute best lyme doctor they can possibly afford. This is the doc I recommend for your son. It will give him the best chance of getting well.
You will love this doctor! She hasn't accepted new patients for nearly the last 3 years, but now she has opened her practice to new people. No telling how long this will last.
You cannot expect your pediatrician to know how to treat this extremely complex disease which is so hard to cure. You need to see a doc like this one whose entire practice is lyme disease. She has specialized in this disease for over 15 years. Both she and her young daughters had lyme.

Hey JOD...
So sorry you son is so ill. Here is a website with info geared towards children with tick borne diseases in the event you want to do some (more) research or have questions.
Before you consider driving or flying across the county, which is NOT necessary...
If you go to www.MarylandLyme.org and look at the menu to your left you will see "DOCTOR REFERRALS".
Click there to find the names and contact information for health care professionals in many fields who are treating Lyme & TBD's in all of the states that have them.
Here are some ways to locate alternative health care professionals too.
